Library Journal
Depending on how one chooses to view it, this aptly named book is either a potpourri of strange and wonderful ideas or a collection of far-fetched suppositions. The text consists of interviews with 17 men and women, among them Timothy Leary, John Lilly, Allen Ginsberg, and Laura Huxley. These conversations cover such diverse topics as communication with dolphins, lucid dreaming, chaos theory, cybernetics, psychedelic consciousness, physics, and time travel. Although the book's question-and-answer format may not appeal to everyone, there will certainly be readers interested in this volume's unique subject matter. For large collections.-- January Adams, ODSI Research Lib., Raritan, N.J.

Though the 1960s are over, of course, the tide of alternative thought continues to sweep forth. And alternative thought has its luminaries. In "Mavericks", some of these folks propound, to their interesting but noncritical interviewers, theories on such topics as shamanism, occultism, science, and poetry. Included are such literary figures as Allen Ginsburg and Robert Anton Wilson, LSD experimenter Timothy Leary, and philosophical scientist Rupert Sheldrake. Though not for everyone, this engaging volume will be valued in New Age and larger philosophy collections.
