Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Carrie Hane Hung
Max reveals to his friend Zoe that he is scared to go to the dentist. Max must have two baby teeth removed and he anticipates the pain of having them pulled. Although Zoe tries to help Max think about the great toys that he will get to pick out from dentist's prize box, he is still nervous. The three-chapter story quickly moves through the dialogue of the characters. The color illustrations provide some support to the story; some children may wonder why the pictures at the end of the story don't feature Max with two teeth missing in his smile. At the back of the book, readers will find a brief biography of the author and illustrator. The glossary includes six words with a pronunciation guide. There are some different activities included in the book: a few discussion questions, some writing prompts, and directions to make a tooth box. The publisher's website has more activities. Readers who are familiar with Max in the series written by Adrian Klein will find a strong resemblance with Max in this series of "Max and Zoe" stories. Reviewer: Carrie Hane Hung
