Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Alicia Jensen
Max Archer is on the case and this time he is helping Emily solve her mysterious stomach aches. Emily explains to Max that she passes gas often and gets stomach aches once or twice a week. Max makes a poop chart tracker and asks her to chart her poop, as well as asks her to track her milk consumption since digestion and lactose are some of the main causes of stomach aches, but everything comes back normal. Lastly Max decides to track Emily's stress to see if that has any correlation to her stomach aches, and voila—stress is the culprit. Max then explains how stress can affect our digestive system and gives Emily many stress relieving techniques. This medical book is written in a light-hearted and entertaining way to teach children about stress. Bennett uses terminology that kids will absolutely love, and has many facts and diagrams throughout the story to help children fully understand their digestive system. The book also has an activities section in the back that has great games and tasks, plus a question and answer section. The illustrations are amusing and do a great job of taking something complex (like the human bodies digestive system) and making it interesting to follow. The only caution is that while this book is a medical help book, it talks a lot about poop and farts, so while it is very informative, it is also very descriptive and may be inappropriate for some children.
