Overview

The fifth volume in this award-winning graphic novel series features ten new mystery comics by OWL Magazine editor Craig Battle, plus two never-before-published short mystery stories by series creator Liam O’Donnell. As always, storylines are intriguing and relevant, illustrations are detailed and compelling, and dialogue is snappy.

Each solve-it-yourself comic stars amateur detective Max Finder and his best friend, budding journalist Alison Santos. Seventh graders at Whispering Meadows Junior High, these two intrepid investigators must call upon their skills to crack each case before them. Who defaced the town with graffiti? Who sabotaged the school magic show try-outs? And who stole the exam answer key from Mr. Reed’s desk? Readers can decipher the clues for themselves and make their own judgments — before the true culprit is revealed.

Bonus content unique to this volume includes a yearbook-style introduction to Max and Alison’s classmates: bully Ben “Basher” McGintley, gossip queen Leslie Chang, prankster Kyle Kressman, and a host of others. Plus, tips and tricks from Max and Alison for readers looking to develop their own eagle eyes and other sleuthing skills!

Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher

“…short but interesting mysteries…Clues are laid out for the sharp eye and clever reader in everything from dialogue to art details in the background, which the clean, inviting art by Perez makes a pleasure to search for.”
-- Publishers Weekly
Children's Literature - Michael Jung PhD
Taken from the pages of OWL Magazine, this collection of Max Finder mysteries follows the junior sleuth and his friends as they crack cases ranging from stolen gifts to Halloween pranks to kidnapped dogs. Told through a mix of comic book-style stories interspaced with prose stories, each mystery invites readers to re-examine the circumstances of each crime and solve the mystery themselves before turning the page and reading the final solution. While the writers and artist slip in several false leads and red herrings to throw kids off track, careful readers who take the time to examine each comic panel and backtrack through each tale should be able to find the culprit for each crime—although they may not discover all the surprising clues the creators left for them. It is an entertaining collection of cases, done in the spirit of Donald Sobol's "Encyclopedia Brown" detective book series, yet definitely aimed at a younger crowd. Reviewer: Michael Jung, PhD
