Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Marilyn Courtot
In this pull-tab book, Max introduces us to his two friends, both of whom live with him in his big orange house. Since his friends are a big blue elephant and a fat pink pig, they must be toys or imaginary friends, although that really isn't clear. The pulls are sturdy but nothing except the wiggly Jell-O is particularly innovative or logical.

PreS-In this lift-the-flap book, Max, an African-American youngster, interacts with his two friends and housemates-a purple pig and a blue elephant. Readers can open doors and windows to see the interiors of their house, wiggle the characters' favorite food (lime Jell-O), and make bubbles with the elephant. At the end, the three pull the shades and say good night. While the minimal descriptions of Max's home life may leave more to be desired ("This is where we live"; "We are a family"), the vivid colors and movable pieces should attract toddlers. The simply written text and cartoon art will entertain them at storytimes or during one-on-one reading.-Jennifer Oyama, Los Angeles Public Library, CA
Kirkus Reviews
A board book with pull-tabs and flaps neatly outlines a child's unconventional but loving family. In the first spread, an African-American child is shown hugging a pink pig in front of a blue elephant: "Max is our friend. We hug!" The next spread is of a house's facade, with three openings to lift: "This is where we live." In other scenes, the three show off their favorite food, a quivering gelatin dessert, and blow bubbles in the back yard. Wilson-Max keeps the paper engineering simple; his cast is affable, but under-utilized by the format. (Board book. 2-5)
