Editorial Reviews

Library Journal - Library Journal
PreS-A simple, spare text gives children a brief glimpse into the life cycle of a sunflower. After planting a seed, preschooler Max waters it. Readers can then pull the tabs to see the sprout grow. On one standout double-page spread, petals are lifted to reveal the full flower. Throughout, the color of the tabs blend into the background illustrations, and may be tricky for some children to find. However, both the muted earthy colors and the character representations of the child and the pink pig who tells his story are appealing and will project well for storytime use.-DeAnn Tabuchi, San Anselmo Public Library, CA Copyright 1999 Cahners Business Information.
Kirkus Reviews
Max Loves Sunflowers (14 pp.; Jun.; 0-7868-0413-0): From the thumbnail-sized seeds that Max plants grow amazing sunflowers, an event wondrous enough to make both the boy and his pig friend dance with joy. This well-crafted pop-up book employs paper engineering to an advantage. A cut-out sprinkle of water slides back and forth over planted seeds; on the next page, seedlings begin to sprout with the help of pull-tabs. When the glorious flower finally emerges, it unfolds into an oversized halo of yellow. As the wind tickles the sunflowers, Max and his pig friend do a little jig. Readers will share in their happiness. (Pop-up. 2-5)
