Editorial Reviews

School Library Journal
Gr 2-4 With the help of his friend Gordy, Max, who first appeared in Max Malone and the Great Cereal Rip-Off (Holt, 1990), blunders from one money making scheme to another. Six-year-old Austin Healy offers to help, but Max dismisses him as too young. Undaunted, Austin embarks on his own projects--with great success. The older boys observe Austin's business prowess: he carefully thinks through each venture, taking into consideration location, the market, his overhead, and his profits. By applying these principles, Max and Gordy are at last able to make money, and they have new respect and admiration for the younger boy. Even reluctant readers will be encouraged by the large type, double-spaced text, short chapters, generous margins, and basic vocabulary. The characters are likable, the plot moves along smoothly, and there's enough dialogue to draw readers into the story. Smith's humorous line drawings, with washes of gray watercolor, punctuate the text nicely. --Laura Culberg, Chicago Public Library Cultural Center
