Recalling the work of Andrew Weil and Larry Dossey, the book argues that our self-healing mechanism—the immune system—is more powerful than we think. If we make wise diet and lifestyle changes, says Silverstein, the immune system can function at an optimal level, restoring health and preventing future illnesses.

Part I explores the five keys to health—five critical domains that affect the immune system: the quality of our air, water, and food; the degree of physical activity we engage in; and the degree of positive feelings and stability in our psychological and emotional lives. Providing a clear description of the immune system, the book details the elements of good health, which include healing foods, minerals, antioxidants, herbs, physical activity, and the avoidance of unrealistic thinking. Part II contains a thirty-day program divided into four parts: diet, exercise, outlook on life, and creating balance in daily life. The book concludes with over sixty restorative recipes designed to boost immunity and help fight chronic illnesses.

Meet the Author

Medical director of the Preventive Medicine Center in Hartford, Connecticut, H. Robert Silverstein, MD, FACC, is a Fellow of the American College of Preventive Medicine. He is a member of the staff at Saint Francis Hospital and Hartford Hospital in Connecticut, and is a clinical assistant professor of medicine at the University of Connecticut School of Medicine. He lives in West Hartford, CT.

I thought I knew most of the information in this book, but I read a sentence that improved my life immediately:  All protein is acid-forming in the body.  As a vegan, I had been taking rice protein daily for a decade.  Somehow this year I developed arthritis in the right hip, which has been making me limp for the past four months, and is painful and embarrassing.  Nine chiropractic treatments and four acupuncture treatments helped only a little bit.  After reading the sentence, I gave up the rice protein, and within four DAYS I have my leg back!  Silverstein puts emphasis on eating whole foods to get much of our nutrition.  He explains how nutrients work in the body, with abundant supplement and meal recommendations.  I heartily recommend this common sense, well organized book.
