Maxwell's Urban Hang Suite

All Music Guide - Stephen Cook
Maxwell's debut offers up a sophisticated and stylized take on late-'60s and early-'70 soul. Sam Cooke, Marvin Gaye, Al Green, and the like are subtly referenced over the course of these 11 tracks of wide-screen soul. Mixing sensual funk with ballad sincerity, Maxwell coolly sings through highlights like "Welcome," ."..Til the Cops Come Knockin'," and "Ascension Don't Ever Wonder." The atmospheric, cool-breeze soundscape comes courtesy of Maxwell and Sade cohort Stuart Mathewman. More expansive and airy sounding than the deep groove and gospel sides by fellow retro-soulster D'Angelo, Urban Hang Suite is destined to become a classic ...

    MAXWELL is AWESOME

I've had this CD since it first came out and it still is in heavy rotation in my Cd player. I think Maxwell brings something new to music that has been missing for sometime. He does not have to sell out to the "norm" and talk about sex, he sings about LOVE and being in love. His music is like poetry to my ears. He is a Stevie or Marvin for my generation. I love him and have bought every CD of his since this one.

IS MAXWELL REALLY THE NEXT BOHEMIAN KING?

ALTHOUGH COMPARED TO BE THE SOULFUL EQUIVALENT TO MARVIN GAYE AND STYLISH EQUAL TO LENNY KRAVITZ, ARE WE REALLY IMPRESSED? UPON REVIEWING THIS CD, I CAN'T REALLY SAY THAT THE BIG-BAND SOUND OF MAXWELL'S TRACKS ARE THAT IMPRESSIVE. THE OLD TIMER INFLUENCE OF HIS VOCAL'S ARE APPARENT , BUT I WOULD LIKE TO HEAR SOME SULTRY BACKROUND TRACKS ON SOME OF HIS SLOWER SONGS. HIS MUSIC WOULD DEFINITELY BE MORE APPEALING IF IT WAS MORE ''BABY MAKING'' SO TO SPEAK. MOST OF HIS SONG'S SOUND ALIKE, ALTHOUGH THE FASTER SONGS ARE MORE COMMERCIAL, HIS SLOWER SONG'S ARE MORE LURID. I UNDERSTAND THAT HE SELL'S OUT CONCERT'S ,BUT IF HE CAN'T HOLD MY ATTENTION DURING 12 TRACKS, HOW CAN HE HOLD MY ATTENTION DURING 60 ODD MINUTES OF HIGH PITCHED LULLABIES? YOU BE THE JUDGE.

A wonderful classic love ballad, funky, smooth cd!!!!

I bought this release in December 1996 and gave a copy of it as a special Christmas gift. When I first heard the cd, it gave me a warm, sexy feeling and I still get that feeling when I play it now, 5 years after it's debut. It's a great cd to listen to if you want to get in the mood... Mmm Mmm Mmm...What a wonderfully expressive singer Maxwell is!!!
