A well-mannered little boy, frequently invited to visit the king and queen, always asks to bring a friend--and the friends are always wild animals--and always well-behaved.

    May I Bring A Friend?

This book is a 1965 Caldecott award winner!! Throughout the story the king and queens keeps asking the boy to join them for dinner. Each time he asks ' May I Bring a Friend.' They always say yes and welcome his ' WILD' friends in their home! However these are not ordinary friends! At the end we find out where his friends come from! They are animals at the zoo! This book would be good for 1st graders!Schenk, Beatrice. May I Bring a Friend?. New York, NY: Aladdin Paperbacks, 1964.

    The More The Merrier

Regniers,Beatrice. May I Bring A Friend?Hong Kong. Aladin Paperbacks,1974. Reading Level 2.7. The main character in this story, a small boy, was invited to come to the palace for tea. 'I told the Queen And the Queen told the King I had a friend I wanted to bring. So I brought a friend...' And thus it begins! In this wonderfully illustrated story we meet many, many friends. It all gets better the more friends we meet. The pictures are wonderfully simple, accenting the story but allowing the imagination to fill in the rest.

Caldecott Winner May I Bring a Friend

This is a great little rhyming book that really seemed to entice my nephew when I read it to him. It is about a boy who is friends with the king and queen. Everyday of the week the king and queen invite the boy to come and visit them and every time he tells the king and queen that he has, ¿¿a friend that he wants to bring.¿ They always tell him that it is ok and the boy always brings some kid of crazy jungle animal with him to visit. In the end he invites the king and queen to come visit his friends and they are in for a surprise when they find out where they are going. This is a great book for children between five and seven. Beatrice Schenk De Regniers, the books author, has unfortunately died in 2000. Schenk De Regniers, Beatrice. May I Bring A Friend. New York: Aladdin Paperbacks, 1964.

    My Review

May I Bring a Friend tells the story of a small boy who is invited to have tea on a Sunday with the King and Queen. When the boy asks if he can bring a friend, the King and Queen answers by saying ¿any friend of a friend is welcome here.¿ You¿ll never guess what friend the boy brings with him to meet the King and Queen! Nope, I¿m not telling! You¿ll just have to read the book for yourself. After the boy and his friend arrive for tea, do you think he¿ll ever be invited back?

    Cooper's Review

The king and queen invited 'me' to come to their house on Sunday for tea. Thus 'me' draws the child into the story right away, and he/she can easily imagine that she is the main character being entertained at the palace. The boldness of the child in inviting a friend along is also reminiscent of a child's innocence regarding social graces. The child's friends shock and awe the kind and queen, but they treat them graciously and with as much respect as their beloved child friend. The illustrations themselves are very interesting and detailed, but would be most appreciated in a larger, hardcopy version (we borrowed a 7' paperback version). My one reservation is the color background. I feel that the artwork would have been better served in black and white, and that the color actually detracts, making the illustrations look busy. Granted, this book was printed in 1964, and the expectations of quality artwork were different then. Something to keep in mind when you first pick up the book, so you don't overlook it as a mediocre, one of many in a stack. I wouldn't buy this book unless my child fell in love with it, and thus far, he hasn't requested it since I read it to him the first time. I always give a book another chance though, on another day, unless there is some glaring problem with the book. The short story received a Caldecott Medal in 1965. It was written for preschool through 2nd grade.

Shawna Wyatt Book Review Authored By: Beatrice Schenkde Regniers This s tale of a child who is invited multiple times to dinner, lunch, and tea with the king and queen each time the little boy asks if he can bring a friend and each time he brings an animal. The last time that he is invited to the palace the little boy tells the king and queen to come with him to see all of his friends at the city zoo. A delightful tale of friendship and animal love. Second Generation Is Enjoying This Wonderful Book

May I Bring A Friend was one the favorite books which my children checked out of the library. They read it over and over again. Now I am purchasing it for my nine grandchildren's enjoyment! I know they will enjoy it just as much as their parents did back in the sixties!
