School Library Journal - School Library Journal
Gr 3-5-The award-winning Asian-American designer of the Vietnam Memorial has all the requisites to be an ideal subject for a children's biography. Unfortunately, this one disappoints on several counts. Focusing mainly on the controversy surrounding her design for the memorial, Italia presents scant information on the woman herself. Further, although descriptions of her major works are given, only ``The Wall'' is illustrated-and those black-and-white photographs are poor reproductions of previously published shots, adding little to the flat text. The book also suffers from a lack of attention to editorial detail-quotation marks open but never close; titles are sometimes italicized, sometimes not; and index entries are inconsistent. Readers will find more detail in David Wright's The Story of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial (Childrens, 1989) or Judy Donnelly's A Wall of Names (Random, 1991). Those seeking information on Lin herself are better advised to look to periodical offerings (e.g., Current Biography, April 1993).-Anita Palladino, Finkelstein Memorial Library, Spring Valley, NY
