Maybe You Should Drive

All Music Guide - William Ruhlmann
Barenaked Ladies are a little less interested in the quirky and comic on their second album, perhaps recognizing that They Might Be Giants have that niche covered. Instead, though, they are showing their sensitive folk-pop roots, which makes them winning, if a little wet. XTC, anyone? But one thing they aren't is "alternative," a matter dealt with in the chorus of the song "Alternative Girlfriend," when they sing, "There's nothing left that won't cross over." Well put, and present company included.

    Most underrated BNL release

"Maybe You Should Drive" seems to get the same comment a lot: it's not their best, but it's still good. I can agree with that to a point, but BNL's material has varied so much over the years that it may be better to say "Maybe You Should Drive" is just a different kind of good. This album as a whole represents what I think are the band's most touching and reflective moments. Also, Andy Creeggan's musical touches make this album shine. "The Wrong Man Was Convicted" makes you hurt inside, and "Intermittently" makes you scream with joy (if I hear that song once, I can't move on with my life until I listen to it eight more times). If you like pop radio, go with BNL's "Maroon" or "Everything to Everyone," but if you like folksier tunes, maybe you should get "Maybe You Should Drive."

    Good, but not great!

Since I have nothing else to do with my pathetic little life I thought I might try to help people lost in this business of muisic. BNL is a terrific band. I'm a huge fan, but probably not their number 1 fan. It's not their best work, but the lyrics are beautifully written. If you really want to get into BNL, look into purchasing their first CD, Gordon. That's their best piece of work!

Not best of their's, but still an awesome cd

This is a great album. This Cd incorporates the expected great music from BNL and their special touch of humor in songs such as "A" and "Life in a "Nutshell". I love this album. All the songs are good, but I would highly recommend "Life in a Nutshell" and "Alternative Girlfriend" (two of my all time favorite songs).

    Oh, wow!

Come on, I can't believe no one else has reviewed this. It seems like not many people have heard of it! But, it is so good! I mean it. Buy this CD! Buy all of their CD's! But really, this is one of the best. I love the lyrics and the sounds. This rocks! Really.
