This vegan cookbook from The Big Bang Theory actress and mom Bialik and pediatrician Gordon (Preventing Autism: What You Can Do To Protect Your Child Before and After Birth) seeks to convince readers to adopt a plant-based diet. The authors argue that veganism is more healthy, ethical, and environmentally friendly than other diets and spend considerable time describing the evils of cheese, ice cream, and other popular foods. They attempt approachability but come across as strongly biased; for instance, they denounce Oscar Mayer Lunchables, listing all their processed ingredients, but never examine the makeup of popular dairy substitutes (e.g., vegan mayonnaise). VERDICT Many readers will enjoy these easy, family-friendly recipes, but they should consult the dietary advice with caution.

    Simple, nutritious, and great-tasting vegan meals

    I have a library of vegan cookbooks in my kitchen. I also have a picky omnivore for a husband, and a four year old picky vegetarian child. It can be difficult to find meals that everyone enjoys eating, which don't require me to make foods that contain animal ingredients. There is enough in this cookbook to keep everyone happy.

    I've noticed that vegan cookbooks are often filled with difficult, expensive meals, or with ingredients so exotic I'd have to drive 2+ hours to find a store that carries them. This book is centered mostly on items the average grocery should carry, are easy to prepare, and are relatively inexpensive, so that makes it a double win!

    I was interested in this book because I like Mayim Bialik as an actress, so I started it with some reservation
     about Vegan-ism. I have to say Mayim and Dr. Jay made me take a second look at my health, food sources,
     and menus. I think the book is informative without being pushy like some Vegans can be.
     After reading this book I am seriously considering a plant based life from here on out. It shows that you can
     live this way and still find joy in food without feeling deprived. All I can say is good work and what a way to put
     together something that most would think is hard to live. You make it seem so easy and simple.
     I loved the book and feel better for reading it and even if I don't become a Vegan I will definitely change
    the way I eat and put more plants based foods in my diet and cut out things that are not so good for my body
     and health. Thanks Mayim and Dr. Jay

    Informative with Tasty Recipes

    If you’ve ever considered going vegan or wondered what cooking vegan would be like, check out MAYIM’S VEGAN TABLE by Mayim Bialik with Dr. Jay Gordon. This interesting cookbook includes over 100 healthy recipes that are easy to prepare. There are tips and informational tidbits woven throughout. The cookbook begins with helpful information on what plant-based eating really is and how we can benefit from it. At the same time, the author notes that the vegan lifestyle can take some time to adjust to and that it may not be for everyone. The contents are divided into the usual food categories: breakfast; soups, salads and sandwiches; snacks, sauces and dips; veggies and sides; entries; bread; and desserts. There is also a metric table to help with conversions. The cookbook’s style is reminiscent of cookbooks from an earlier era when few photos were included and the emphasis was on the recipes. This style gives the cookbook the feel of something handled down from generation to generation. The few color photos includes focus on the dishes presented and give the food a very appealing look. While there does appear to be an ingredient missing in a few of the recipes, for the most part cooks will be able to adjust the recipes without any problems. The recipes call for simple and easy techniques that result in a delicious dish that is also healthy. I found this cookbook informative and chalked full of tasty dishes that even non-vegans can enjoy. MAYIM’S VEGAN TABLE makes a nice addition to any cookbook collection as it offers healthy and appetizing recipes.
