Reviewer: Sally Ling, M.D.;FACP(University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Medicine)
Description: This well organized manual was written by medical residents and consultants for use by on call medical residents. It is organized by a section on signs and symptoms, followed by laboratory diagnoses, then, the commonly considered diseases and therapies.
Purpose: The book was written with the goals of facilitating residents' ability to reach a working diagnosis and implement a short term management plan. The design of the book allows readers to approach problems from signs and symptoms, laboratory abnormalities, or suspected disease process.
Audience: It is intended for medical residents. The authors are certainly credible as this effort arose from their collective need and experience. It was written in conjunction with consulting staff at the Mayo Clinic College of Medicine.
Features: Though a bit heavy to carry in one's pocket, this book will have much of the information an on call medical resident would like to have readily available. One general area not reviewed is stroke evaluation and management.
Assessment: This book is concisely written, well laid out, and contains useful information. Overall, it is a very nice book.
