Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Kristin Harris
Josh McBroom packed up his family, all of them, and headed West. With only $10 in his pocket, he was stunned when he was offered an 80-acre farm for just that sum. Hector Jones was a con man, and rejoiced in fleecing McBroom, selling him only a muddy pond. McBroom, being of great disposition despite the circumstances, encouraged his brood to jump into the pond and cool off on that very hot day. A dry spell followed, and McBroom realized that his dried up pond was extremely rich top soil. Within an hour they had planted and harvested a crop of beans, and they only had to wait three hours for a shade tree to grow. But Hector Jones was now even more determined to swindle McBroom back out of his miraculous farm. Despite his best efforts, the family perseveres. A great story about creative problem solving and making the best of what appears to be a bad situation.
