Overview

Praise for McCoy’s Marines: Darkside to Baghdad:

War, death, pathos, personal sacrifice, courage, bravery, leadership, charisma, history . . . these are but a few of the issues Koopman addresses in his gripping true account of McCoy’s Marines in Iraq.—Follow Me (the newsletter of the 2nd Marine Division)

[Koopman] writes in a clipped, hard-boiled prose and stays away—in the manner of the soldiers with whom he travels—from politics. Instead, his book is a description of the day-to-day progress of the Three-Four on their way north to Baghdad, where they encountered some of the worst fighting of the early days of the war. Koopman’s story could have taken place anywhere—as far back as the Napoleonic wars. It’s an unpleasant tale most of the time. But again, that seems to be the point.—San Francisco Chronicle

Personal battle accounts, interviews and anecdotes—as well as a look at McCoy’s philosophy of “hands-on” motivational leadership—are at the core of this gripping 300-page front-line report detailing the vast campaign with the courage of ordinary Marines. This deeply human look into the spirits, hearts and minds of our men and women during life-or-death skirmishes deserves to be read by all Americans.—Army Times

McCoy’s Marines is a brilliant intersection of journalism and combat. In addition to detailing candid views of the war from the ground up, Koopman vividly portrays the brutal realities of killing without jingoism and cheerleading. This deeply human look into the spirits, hearts and minds of our men and women during life-or-death skirmishes deserves to be read by all Americans. More then 30 color photos, most taken by Koopman, add to the integrity of the text.—Air Force Times

Rare Real Look at the War

As a young female, books about war rarely peek my interest. However, the face of 'McCoy' caught my attention and my journey to Iraq began. I find this book at times impossible to put down and always engaging. As Americans we often sit from the sidelines watching as the world outside our window implodes. Reading this book allows for you to become embedded with these brave men. Providing you with a tangible look at war and the many emotions it ignites in those that engage. Mr. Koopman was fair and honest, and that was appreciated. He did not try to wax eloquent or impose his beliefs, but rather gave the story as it was, and for that I am thank full. But, more importantly I gained a greater appreciation for the men and women of our armed services. You learn that no matter what your political stance is about the war, you cannot deny that these men and women are doing something many of us would never have the guts to do and doing it well. This book makes me proud to be an American. You can not be anything but proud, when you realize that their are those like McCoy's Marines around to protect all that we are.

He Told a Story with Grace and Truth

My husband was one of the many marines under the leadership of Col McCoy. Since returning from Iraq he hasn't talked too much about his service in country. This book tells me what my husband saw and experienced. It gives me a greater understanding for his quieter moments, a greater appreciation for the cause he follows and I complain less about not having him beside me. I am proud my husband is a Marine and grateful there is a story of his company of men for my daughters to learn about a difficult time for us all. This author has written with grace and compassion while never straying from the true horrors of war. He speaks of the lighter moments, the fear and the loss of men frankly. I thank him for that ... on a personal note I also wish to thank him for taking the time to email me one morning to let me know my husband was okay and safe. Regardless of your stance on this war in Iraq, the facts are our men and women are there doing a difficult job. It is through books like these we can discover for ourselves what is happening, what they are experiencing and hopefully through books like these our men and women won't return home to a 'Vietnam' welcome.

    A reviewer

My son was in the 3/4, Kilo with McCoy for the first two tours in Iraq, and he earned a medal for Heroism with Valor for his part in the battle at Karma. Mr. Koopman has put into words what my son couldn't bring himself to tell me. His writing style is easy to read, even if the content isn't always. Keep the tissues handy. And thank you to Mr. Koopman and the other journalists who have risked it all to tell us the true story of what our loved ones do for the sake of human freedom.

    Semper Fi!

I couldn't put the book down, finishing it in one day. Not only because my husband is a member of the battalion written about, but because this book gives an inside view without personal opinion. The book made me laugh, made me cry, and made me incredibly proud to be an American and to hear incredible work done by Americans. God Bless America!

Great reporting from the front lines of Iraq...

I thought this was a great story about Marines in Iraq. Koopman maintained his objectivity throughout, but you can't help but read between the lines. As a former Marine himself, you sense the respect he has for our current day Marines, especially their leaders. I enjoyed the firsthand account of action on the ground in Iraq. Thank you for telling the Marines story. You earned our respect and admiration for putting yourself at the front to tell this story. Semper Fi.
