Now you know why students can't do math!

Houghton Mifflin Publishing was the first major publisher in the early 60's to develop the "modern school mathematics" program, headed by Dr. Mary P. Dolciani. These textbooks were the most widely used secondary math textbooks in the country thru the 60's, 70's and 80's, upon the death of Dr. Dolciani. Hougton Mifflin still publishes the "structure and method" series as part of its cirriculum.
In the 90's they turned to Ron Lawson, et al to develop a new series. Because of the HM name, and for some unexplanable reason, this series is now the largest selling series in the country. The text is terrible. It is highly watered-down, with little to no expository in each chapter and mostly pictures and examples. As an Algebra 1 course, twently years ago, this would have been pre-algebra. There isn't any coherent chapter structure or development.

The TE's is a large, heavy nightmare of a book to teach from and read. It alone weights 8 lbs, so pity the poor teacher carrying this from room to room. The TE centers mostly on the psychology of teaching mathematics (read: methods course) than actual suggestions on teaching (which the Dolciani books did with clarity).

If you want to know why we as a country and society have fallen behind in mathematics, look at almost any secondary math text...you will find your answer.
