Editorial Reviews

Doody's Review Service
Reviewer: Raquel K Walsh Jahnke, DO, MBA (University of Kansas Medical Center)
Description: This is a set of flashcards intended as a quick review of common diagnostic entities in anatomic pathology.
Purpose: The purpose is to present a quick review for pathology residents studying for the anatomic pathology board examination or practicing anatomic pathologists preparing for their maintenance examination.
Audience: The flashcards are tailored to pathology residents and practicing pathologists.
Features: Among the anatomic pathology topics the cards cover are bone and soft tissue, cytology, dermatopathology, hematopathology, and transplantation pathology. The flashcards, which are in color, show microscopic (or occasionally gross) images for users to identify the appropriate diagnosis. The back of the flashcards discuss the diagnosis, proper interpretation, immunohistochemistry, and differential diagnoses. The benefit of this type of study method is that users have to actively think about the tumor/process without referring to a book. One of the drawbacks of the flashcards is their inability to present every type of tumor encountered, including some of the rare entities. It also would have been helpful to have questions on the front of the cards to help users determine the types of questions they should be able to answer.
Assessment: This set of flashcards is a great addition to the current review resources for board examinations in the field of pathology. They are a great concise and quick review for residents studying for boards or reviewing for an in-service examination. They are by no means a comprehensive review, but serve as another tool for residents to study, especially those who benefit from this format.
