Doody's Review ServiceReviewer: Meagan Elizabeth Geuther, B.S. in Chemist(University of Texas Medical School at Houston)
Description: Using diverse memory techniques including matching, listing, diagrams, and crosswords, these flashcards provide comprehensive preparation for the EMT certification exam in an easily portable format.
Purpose: Because they are intended to be used for exam preparation, they cover all the major topics on the exam and are ideal for pinpointing weaknesses. The cards meet the objective of reviewing the major body of knowledge necessary for the exam, and would be great for reviewing key facts and treatment algorithms.
Audience: The audience is EMT students preparing for the EMT certification exam. One author is a paramedic with experience as an EMT training unit supervisor, and the other is a medical director of EMS training programs with significant experience in EMT training and the EMT certification exam.
Features: The flashcards are grouped into nine areas — preparatory, pharmacology, patient assessment, airway, shock and resuscitation, medical, trauma, special patient populations, and EMS operations. They provide an excellent and comprehensive review of the topics, using several memory techniques to prevent boredom while studying. Especially useful are the diagram cards and treatment algorithm cards. Less useful are the crossword cards, which are difficult to use in this format. For study purposes, these flashcards are an excellent resource for reviewing the material covered on the exam. They would be especially useful for assessing weaknesses in knowledge and nailing down key facts for last minute review before the exam. The major shortcoming of the cards is the thin paper they are printed on, which makes them difficult to safely transport in a pocket without protection from bending and liquids.
Assessment: I would absolutely use these flashcards as a study tool. They are an up-to-date, easy-to-use, portable resource and a thorough review of the material covered on the EMS certification exam. Laminating them would make them even better.
