Good coverage of GED Mathematics, needs more detailed explanations

I am planning to use this book in a GED Mathematics preparation course I am teaching. The book covers all math topics that appear on the GED, and it is reasonably priced. The writing is clear, simple, and at appropriate grade level. However, I think more and better explanations are needed and some of the procedures are not detailed enough for students to follow. For instance, on page 33, the example "what is 7^0?" is given. The book explanation is "Raising a number to the zero power is like dividing a number by itself [and so the answer is 7/7 = 1]." This is an attempt to give some explanation for the rule a^0 = 1, but I think it confuses more than enlightens.

This looks like an excellent book to use either in a classroom or with a good tutor. I would not recommend it for self-study.

    I Also Recommend:

A very thorough book to help you pass the GED mathematics section

I have purchased this GED math book from Barnes & Nobles offline. From the actual Manhattan big main Barnes & Nobles store in 2008. I have aced the math portion of my GED, thanks to this wonderful book and the author, who wrote this book. I can't help but offer my resounding praise to this man. The style that this book was written in. I have felt as if this author was teaching mathematics for over 30+ years. In reality, I don't even know this man in real life, let alone me living that long. I am also saddened, when I look at the reviews for this book. Some people actually take the time to review this book for what it is. However, a great deal of reviewers seem to be very nasty towards this book. This GED math book is extremely concise. I kid you not, you will not find a more comprehensive book than this for the GED math. Again, I have not been paid by this author; I don't even know this man as I said before. I have tried several times to pass my GED math portion and failed those numerous times. I have tried nearly all the GED math books (which btw I have also purchased all of them from barnes & Nobles offline)! Be it: Barrons complete GED, REA Complete book/just math book, Steck-Vaughn GED math and numerous others to remember.

The only drawback however in this book and the only one. Is this book missing: solving simultaneous equations. Although this book provides some of that stuff in graph format towards the end (and I'm still not too clear on that simultaneous equations concept, although not too many thus far appeared on the GED tests). It is clear that this book does not provide the other two methods that could be used to solve these equations; I suggest the revision of this book to incorporate that. Also this book comes with CD which mine did not.

Also here is a suggestion that may work in my opinion to pass the GED math. This suggestion has worked for me but it may not work for you. So I'm only providing the suggestion. It is not meant to be made or carved in stone.

First: Buy this book [Mcgraw-Hill's GED Mathematics with CD-ROM], which is this one that I'm reviewing right now. Study it very well and do everything in it to the "T" do not miss a thing.

Second: Buy the workbook [McGraw-Hill's GED Mathematics Workbook] to accompany this [Mcgraw-Hill's GED Mathematics with CD-ROM] book. The [McGraw-Hill's GED Mathematics Workbook] workbook is much skinnier and should not replace this [Mcgraw-Hill's GED Mathematics with CD-ROM] bigger textbook. The workbook does not really give you enough instructions to gain any new concepts in math.Yet it serves purpose well by just being a workbook. This workbook assumes you already purchased the full [Mcgraw-Hill's GED Mathematics with CD-ROM.]. This [McGraw-Hill's GED Mathematics Workbook] workbook is only a companion that gives you tons of extra practice to what you already learned before from the complete book that I'm reviewing right now.
Third: Purchase the [McGraw-Hill's Top 50 Math Skills for GED Success] and learn each skill a day. That is after completing the main book and the workbook. Keep in mind, if you just register for the test and try to cram for it. Cramming for the GED will not help you pass your GED math portion or any portion. You really need to study enough to pass all your GED test parts. So give yourself plenty of time to study all these books. Links to other two books are in recommendations. I have ran out of space.
