    A Great Legal Translator's/Interpreter's Reference

I recommend the McGraw-Hill's bilingual legal dictionary especially to early candidates for court interpreter certification in the U.S. It's also a useful addition to any seasoned legal interpreter/translator's reference bookshelf. In my 20 years of court and legal linguistic services, I have found that dictionaries serve as individual tools for the professional wordsmith. Like a mechanic with a cabinet full of specialized wrenches in various sizes, large and small bilingual and monolingual legal dictionaries, from a variety of countries - with their particular legal jargon - and written by authorities with differing credentials, are essential to a proper rendition of the wide range of materials that the translator/interpreter could be expected to translate or interpret in his/her working languages.

Naturally, beginning linguists in the profession will want (and need) to invest small sums in their tools, first, buying basic high quality reference books like this volume. The dictionary is by Henry Saint Dahl and his team, and is authoritative for finding initial definitions in law.

Any dictionary is only a 'sampling' of available technical jargon from the author/publisher's warehouse of knowledge. As the linguist learns more about U.S. laws and those of other countries, the larger Dahl's Law Dictionary: Spanish-English, an annotated legal dictionary, could be a logical addition for the translator/interpreter. It is also available from Barnes and Noble at well over twice the price of the present volume and provides more-detailed information for those who are prepared to utilize it.

As a source of bilingual legal terminology and jargon for the beginner, and an excellent cross-reference for the working professional, the McGraw-Hill's Spanish-English Legal Dictionary serves an important purpose at an economical price.

    Not Recommended

I am currently preparing to take my oral examination for court interpreting, I purchased this dictionary and to be very honest, I am not at all impressed with it. I am fluent and some of the terms do not seem to even be correct. Most people in the courtroom such as defendants would not understand some of these terms.
