Doody's Review ServiceReviewer: Barbara M. Egbert, MD (VA Palo Alto Health Care System)
Description: This excellent dermatopathology textbook has both high quality photomicrographs of histology and clinical photographs of many entities. The previous edition was published in 2005.
Purpose: The purpose of this edition is to incorporate the new developments in the field of dermatopathology.
Audience: This book is especially valuable to practitioners of dermatopathology, but it also would be very useful for residents and medical students. The authors are world class authorities in the field.
Features: In addition to basic dermatopathology, the book covers immunohistochemistry, molecular biology, and targeted therapy. New to this edition and especially well covered are topics such as sentinel lymph node pathology. Also added are chapters on HIV/AIDS, tumors of the conjunctiva, and oral pathology and salivary glands. This book really does not have any shortcomings, but in order to make room, the references are now online, which adds a step.
Assessment: This is a book of the highest quality. The books in the same league all have laudable qualities. The closest competitor is Weedon's Skin Pathology, 3rd edition, Weedon (Elsevier, 2010), and another high quality book is Lever's Histopathology of the Skin, 10th edition, Elder et al. (Lippincott Williams & Wilkins, 2009). McKee's has the advantage of being the most current, with up-to-date material by expert authors, as well as exceptionally good illustrations.
