Chapter 9: Troubleshooting

Event Messages

Web Proxy has three different types of event messages: service even messages, cache even messages, and array and chain event messages. These messages and a brief description of each are covered in the following sections.

Web Proxy Service Event Messages

The Web Proxy service event messages (including arrays and chains) appear in the system event log with the WebProxyServer and WebProxyLog source names.

The Web Proxy service logs in the following event messages:

  • HTTP/1.0 500 server error (an attempt has been made to operate on an impersonation token by a thread that is not currently impersonating a client).
  • HTTP/1.0 500 server error (-number).
  • HTTP/1.0 500 server error (the specified module could not be found).
  • 115—W3Proxy failed to start because the Microsoft Proxy Server RC program expired on date. Please contact Microsoft about this product.
  • 118—The Web Proxy service was halted. The 60-day free evaluation period has expired.
  • 125—The Web Proxy service received number requests from the Internet port during the past number seconds while Internet publishing was disabled.
  • 126—The Web Proxy service configuration has been modified number time(s) during the past number seconds.
  • 129—The Web Proxy service is continued.
Web Proxy Cache Event Messages

The Web Proxy service cache even messages appear in the system event log with the WebProxyCache source name.

Tip

If caching does not occur, make sure there's sufficient disk spaceavailable on the cache drive.

The Web Proxy service logs the following cache event messages:

  • 111—Web Proxy cache initialization failed due to an incorrect configuration. Please use the administration utility or manually edit the Registry to correct the error and restart the service.
  • 112—Web Proxy cache corrected a corrupted or old format URL cache by removing all or part of the cache's contents.
  • 113—Web Proxy cache failed to initialize the URL cache on disk.
  • 114—The hard disk used by the Web Proxy Server service to cache popular URLs is full. Space needs to be freed, or the Web Proxy cache needs to be reconfigured to resume normal operation.
Web Proxy Array and Chain Event Messages

The Proxy Server array and chain even messages appear in the system event log with the WebProxyServer and WebProxyLog source names. The Web Proxy service logs the following array and chain event messages:

  • 130—The Web Proxy service detected that the upstream proxy servername is down.
  • 131—The Web Proxy service detected that the upstream proxy servername is back up.
  • 132—The Web Proxy service detected that the array member servername is down.
  • 133—The Web Proxy service detected that the array member servername is back up.
  • 139—Proxy Server servername requires proxy-to-proxy authentication. Proxy Server servername is not configured with this type of authentication.
Web Proxy Service Registry Keys

Web Proxy has four different types of values: service, service MIB, service cache, and service publishing values. These values are covered in the following sections.

Web Proxy Service Values

The Web Proxy service Registry keys are located in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\W3Proxy\Parameters.

Web Proxy Service MIB Values

The path to the dynamic link library (DLL) for the Web Proxy service Management Information Base (MIB) is located in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\W3Proxy\CurrentVersion.

Note: The MIB is a set of objects that can be used by the Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) to manage Proxy Server. SNMP works by sending messages, called Protocol Data Units (PDUs), to the proxy server. The server than returns a list of its manageable objects to the SNMP requesters.
Web Proxy Service Cache Values

The three important Registry keys are the cache parameters, the cache path, and the cache filters. The cache parameter keys are located in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\W3Pcache\Parameters.

The cache path keys are located in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\W3Pcache\UrlData.

Web Proxy Service Publishing Values

The parameters that define the reverse proxy (publishing) values of the Web Proxy service are located in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\W3Proxy\Parameters\Reverse Proxy.

Mapping routes an incoming Internet request from the system identified in the request to another system located behind the proxy server. The Registry keys for mapping are located in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\W3Proxy\Parameters\Reverse Proxy\Mapping...
