Description: This book presents a multidisciplinary approach to the diagnosis and management of patients with oncologic diseases. It is an update, and more, of the first edition published in 2006. It employs pictures, tables. and diagrams to effectively elucidate information.
Purpose: The purpose of this edition is to provide a practical, evidence-based, hands-on reference for practicing oncologists, with a particular focus on the multidisciplinary approach to the management of the cancer patient. These are important objectives and the authors have created an easy to read book with excellent quality photographs which stimulate the reader's attention/interest.
Audience: Although the book targets practicing oncologists, it is also ideal for fellows and internal medicine residents who would like a book that addresses all aspects of cancer management. It is also an excellent resource for practicing oncology nurses. The contributors are among the world's leading experts in medical oncology.
Features: In great detail, the book covers the biology, epidemiology, clinical features, diagnosis, and management of hematological and solid malignancies, with chapters on supportive care of the patient with cancer, palliative care, and long-term survival. The book uses excellent quality color pictures and detailed, evidence-based algorithms to deliver the information. I especially appreciated that the book was easy to read, with clearly defined subject headings, and that it paid attention to stem cell transplantation, palliative care, and long-term survival especially for our international colleagues. It was also interesting to learn about the authors' experience in their institutions and future directions in the evaluation and management of these diseases.
Assessment: This is a quality resource for practicing oncologists the world over. It meets the need for a book that presents a realistic and multidisciplinary approach to the diagnosis and management of patients with cancer. This edition is justified with its new chapters on rare cancers and updates of other chapters.
