Does a new name make a new you? Which name? Which boyfriend? Which answer? Yes or no?

Erin never had to make so many decisions before!

Should she be adopted by her stepfather and change her name? If you have been Erin Mitchell all your life how can you turn into Erin Zanin? Mitchell has always sounded fine. Plus it connects her to her dad.

But Leo is a great step-dad and now that her mother is expecting, having the same last name would really make them all a family. Mitchell or Zanin? What do you do?

Then there's Richard and Ryan. How do you choose between two cute guys? Should it be Richard, the popular jock or smart and funny Ryan?

Erin even has to choose between yes and no. Can she say no to Kim Adams, the most popular girl in 6th grade when Kim gives her a dare?

How many choices should one kid have to make, anyway? And how do you make them? Find out what Erin does in Me and My Name.

Author Bio: Mary Jane Miller says: The love of story is part of my heritage. One of my earliest memories is drinking tea with my Irish grandmother. When my brother and I would finish our tea, Grandmother read the tea leaves. My own stories, like a quilt, are woven piece-by-piece from an experience, a particular place, a feeling, a question, or a memory.

Erin faces difficult decisions about adoption by her stepfather, a choice between two boys at school, and a game of truth or dare at a slumber party.

Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly - Publisher's Weekly
Erin Mitchell's sixth-grade year is filled with dilemmas. Her stepfather, Leo Zanin, wants to adopt her. Kim Adams, the most popular girl in school, is suddenly befriending her. And two very different boys, one outgoing and popular, the other shy and thoughtful, both like Erin. Will she hurt her real father's feelings if she becomes a Zanin? Should she confide in Kim? Which boy does she truly care about? Erin finally makes an important decision when her real father, after six years, asks her to visit him, and she reluctantly agrees. As Erin begins to trust in herself, the answers to her questions start falling into place. With humor and sensitivity, Miller explores the complexity and confusion of early adolescence. She gently reminds readers that solutions they seek elsewhere can often be found within themselves. A quick, enjoyable read. Ages 6-12. (Oct.)
School Library Journal
Gr 5-7-- Sixth grade is a tough year for Erin Mitchell. Her stepfather, whom she loves, wants to adopt her and her real father has given his permission, but Erin can't decide if she really wants to change her last name to Zanin. There are also problems involving friendship, loyalty, and boyfriends. But her primary concern is about her name and in discovering just who she is. Miller has captured that terrible, wonderful time in the lives of adolescents, when they begin to realize who they are as individuals, not as extensions of their families. Erin's character is well developed, and to a lesser extent so are her mother and stepfather. It is refreshing to find a book in which the stepparent is loving and loved, and the divorced parents are civil to each other despite lingering bad feelings between them. Less than realistic are Erin's biological father's sudden invitation to visit after so many years, their remarkably quick adjustment to each other, and their subsequent good rapport. However, these are minor flaws in an otherwise well-written book. --Nancy P. Reeder, Heathwood Hall Episcopal School, Columbia, SC
