Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
Unlike "Forrest Friends' Five Senses," this is a concept book. This book defines the five senses and explains how they function. The book is subtly divided into five sections. The first section uses lunch to identify the different senses. The narrator hears the doorbell, sees the pizza delivery van, touches the warm pizza box, smells the pizza, and tastes the pizza. The senses are in bold letters in this section. The second section explains how the five senses send messages to the brain. The third section recaps the senses' functions—feel cold ice cubes, taste salty crackers, and so forth. The fourth section is a demonstration of multiple senses being used at one time. The final section invites the reader to make a list of objects that he or she can see, hear, smell, taste and feel. The line drawing and watercolor illustrations complement the simple text. The format of the layout changes with the sections. The first and fourth sections consist of double-page spreads. The second section is also a double-page spread, however, the left page includes a section that highlights the body part responsible for the sense being described. The third section consists of five circled illustrations on two pages that complement the corresponding text. The final section consists of the body parts that are used for the senses and pictures of objects that can utilize the senses. This book is part of "The Me" series. 2003, Crown Publishers/Random House,
