About the Author

Mo Willems is a number one New York Times bestselling author and illustrator. He has been awarded three Caldecott Honors and an Eisner Award for his picture books, and two Theodor Seuss Geisel Medals and five Geisel Honors for his celebrated ELEPHANT & PIGGIE early readers. His debut picture book, Don’t Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus! was inducted into the Picture Book Hall of Fame. Mo began his career as a writer and animator on Sesame Street, where he garnered six Emmy Awards. Mo is the cofounder of Hidden Pigeon Company, established in 2023 to extend the reach of Mo Willems characters and stories across multiple platforms.

Via anthropomorphized rabbits who represent the words me, you, we, them, and us, Willems (Are You Big?) movingly explores themes of individuality and belonging. Throughout the visually straightforward work, what distinguishes the terms is a willingness to bridge a divide—here, the gutter of the book itself. “I am ME,” begins one bunny, standing solo against a solid-colored background. A page turn later, the initial rabbit reappears on the verso; on the recto stands another solo bunny: “You are YOU.” Another page turn later, readers see the duo now holding hands on the same page—“We are US”—and happy smiles on both faces show that this is definitely a positive transformation. The pattern keeps repeating with the appearance of more bunnies, portrayed with various abilities and wearing an array of costumes. They arrive on each spread’s right side looking disconnected from one another, then scoot to the spread’s left side to join a party that’s literally and figuratively hopping. What’s more, on the book’s final page, the original bunny retains space to proclaim “and I am still ME!”—proof that enjoying multiplying connections need not require compromising one’s sense of self. PreS-Gr 2—Willems uses an array of bunnies to show children how we are connected and how pronouns change depending on who they represent. With bright monochromatic backdrops, the book starts with one bunny and the text "i am ME." This is followed by another bunny and "you are YOU." The two bunnies become an "US" who are then compared to "THEM" and then are "US" again when grouped with "THEM." At the end, the original bunny is alone and declares "and i am still ME!" What might seem, at first glance, a simplistic introduction to pronouns is actually a celebration of individuality and belonging. A variety of diverse bunnies are portrayed, including bunnies in wheelchairs and those with vision impairment. The author's signature artwork is evident here, and fans of Knuffle Bunny will enjoy the many versions of this familiar character. It may be that the presence of a lowercase letter "i" is a poor model for children just learning to write, but it suits the spirit of the story. VERDICT While the text is sparse, this small book will inspire much discussion about how we are connected and how within those connections, we are still individuals.—Heidi Dechief
