Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
Forget about "Livin' la Vida Loca." What pop megastar Martin offers is more like "Livin' la Vida Espiritual." He reviews his career, from his years toiling in the boy band Menudo, to acting in soap operas, to launching his solo singing career. By the late 1990s, Martin topped the Latin charts, dominated the world with the "La Copa de la Vida," the anthem for the 1998 World Cup, and quickly won over the English-language market. A chance encounter in Bangkok with a fellow Puerto Rican (and former Buddhist monk) set Martin on a spiritual journey, and the results permeate this book. At its worst, this memoir is superficial, redundant, and full of easy platitudes. At its best, Martin provides an insightful look at personal issues, such as his decision to become a father through surrogacy. Sexual identity—both his struggle with understanding his own sexuality and his decision, earlier this year, to reveal that he is gay—is an important theme, and one that Martin handles well. Verdict Avoiding any name-dropping, sensationalism, or self-exploitation, Martin takes the high road. As a result, this earnest memoir will appeal solely to Martin's serious fan base.—Brian Kenney, Library Journal

"In the process of revealing the human being behind the artist, Ricky Martin offers us a testimonyof exemplary honesty and greatness of soul. While I was reading, I remembered averse from the Persian poet Hafez, ‘Not even seven thousand years of joy can justify sevenyears of repression.’"—Paulo Coelho

"Ricky Martin has written an extraordinary memoir, the story of a tortured soul who healedhimself by returning to the state of innocence and authenticity. His story will speak to you, because it is, in a sense, the story of humanity—of the sacred and the profane, of forbidden lust and unconditional love. It takes courage to be so ruthlessly honest and transparent, but it is only this kind of courage and this kind of love that can heal the world. Bravo!"—Deepak Chopra, M.D.

This is a great story of a great singer, but Mr. Martin could have used a editor that would have made the last half of the book to flow like the first half. We learned about him growing up, becoming a member of Menudo, and his career in soap operas. There wasn't too much about his career during La Vida Loco, She Bang, etc. Then we enter the "needs editing" section. We learn about his passion about ending human trafficking, a noble cause. But without the editing it becomes a very self serving piece of writing. The same is true about the birth of his twins. Another great move he has done, but it comes across very concetied. I wish there were more about his coming out. He makes it see so easy, which is not the same for many people taking that journey. This book could have been so much more.

The first few chapters of the book are interesting as we get to see Ricky Martin's determination and drive to become a singer from an early age. It's amazing how someone so young could be so focused on performing on stage, on composing music, and singing. Mr. Martin is a talented and energetic performer with an abundance of charisma, and charm. However, after a few chapters the writing becomes boring and repetative. Too much technical information about how the music industry runs their business. It was a chore to turn the page and have him rattle on and on about it. I skimmed through the last few chapters bored to tears.

The depth of emotion and spirit on display in this memoir was beautifully surprising. While I have been a fan of Ricky Martin for years, one does not generally expect more than fluff from a singer's memoir. This book more than delivers. Passion, emotion, struggle, perserverance, and finding his true self all make this story compelling and universal. Inspiring! If you didn't love him before this memoir, you will after finishing it! Brilliant! You go, Ricky!

I wanted to like this book, I really did. I thought that maybe there would be something insightful in these pages about a man growing up in a conservative Christian, Latin household, coming to terms with his sexuality. Instead, Ricky Martin speaks in code, constantly referring to his homosexuality as "his truth," focusing more energies on his heterosexual love affairs, and patting himself not he back for his humanitarian efforts.

I picked this up on a whim. It was worth a read. I never knew Ricky Martin had so much depth. It was interesting to read about who he really is, and his values and beliefs. I would especially suggest this book to anyone struggling with their spiritual beliefs or their sexuality. It's nice to see that he has struggles just like anyone else.

This book starts out OK but then turns into a something you would hear at an hour's session of psychotherapy. Dull reading after 2 or 3 chapters. Many chapters are duplicating the same information.
