Editorial Reviews

VOYA
Echoing the recent movie by the same name, this book is touted as a Christian self-help guide for young girls who are victimized by female bullies. Books that are marketed to Christian teens have gotten quite savvy about using teen language, bright covers, and creative layout to broaden their appeal. To that end, the author uses a confidential "big sister" voice, replete with teen idioms, that comes straight from the pages of teen magazines. The layout of the book is eye-catching, with a style reminiscent of a school notebook, complete with text highlighting. But the content of the book veers between practical suggestions on helping teens cope with bullying and an overly repetitive, heavy-handed proselytizing that ends up dominating the text. Even worse, the book is riddled with the worst gender stereotyping. Girls are told that they are vengeful by nature and gossipy and that boys are not "emotional." Yet this book is not a total loss. Perhaps the most eloquent moment in the book is the author's painful account of her own experiences at the hands of "mean girls." Although there are some useful and clever strategies here for teen girls trying to cope with bullies, the main thrust of this book is devoted to the promotion of conservative Christian beliefs. With stricter editing and less evangelizing, this book would have wider appeal, but as it presents the viewpoint of only one particular Christian ideology, it would have little interest or usefulness to Christian teens outside this narrow focus. With that in mind, this book is not a recommended purchase for some public libraries. VOYA CODES: 2Q 2P M J (Better editing or work by the author might have warranted a 3Q; For the YA with aspecial interest in the subject; Middle School, defined as grades 6 to 8; Junior High, defined as grades 7 to 9). 2004, Baker Books, 204p.; Illus., Trade pb. To the 1* rating

This book is a Christian book to help teen girls. It is incredibly helpful spiritually AND socially. Also in reality, girls are vengeful; it is nieve to say they aren't. This is where most of teen girls' bullying comes from... I adore this author. She has helped so many young women including me grow stronger through Christ. God bless <3

Awesome for Facing the Mean Girls

Although I'm not quite finished with the book, it is awesome so far. I have a couple of girls at school that, for some reason, totally hate me. This book has helped me realize that fighting back is NOT the Godly thing to do. I highly recommend this book to any teen girl who has trouble with Mean Girls!

To Mean Girls Part One .

Ow! Im glad Maddie saw that onpurpose throw in the face hit! I feel bad for you. Some times i cry in the shower about my stressful days. Even i cry at night in bed sometimes about lost famly members and sometimes i dont know what im crying about. So my story is even longer than you think! My story is happy at first untill my mom and dad divorce and my mom marries this horrible bad man, and as i speak my little sister is in horrid harm. Now i made it to the good side of rainbow bridge and now safe and sound with my dad and step mom. ( Shes realy nice and loves anime and cost play!) When dad me and my sister first met her daddy asked us if they should marry. We both said yes and i should of said no because she hangs with her sister on minecraft way to much and never plays with me as much as she used to. So i opend mine to LAN world so my dad and mom can join me. But they only care for her little sister whos 14 and loves anime too. So im planning to destroy her buildings by eraiseing the world.
