When nothing is as it seems,
all you can do is trust your heart...

On the eve of her thirtieth birthday, Meara O'Rourke can't help but feel alone. With her last remaining relative newly buried and her potentially disastrous engagement freshly broken, she makes a resolution to begin her life anew -- only to have an unexpected phone call turn her whole world upside down. Her biological mother Sheila, whom she met only once six years before, lies in critical condition in a nearby hospital. And though the woman once refused to see her daughter ever again -- her last wish is just the opposite.

A few whispered words, and Sheila is gone. But the questions she has put into her daughter's head, and the historic stone inn she has unknowingly bequeathed, sweep Meara up into the whirlwind of another life -- and a legacy of deception. When Meara begins to have memories of a place she's never been, she realizes that while finding out the truth about her birth and adoption could answer all her questions -- it could also tear her apart.

"A marvelous story that skillfully interweaves romance with the mystery... Claire makes each element of this terrific tale count." June 2004 Top Pick -- Romantic Times Bookclub Magazine

"An absorbing family mystery... there's no denying that this story is suspenseful."-- Publisher's Weekly

"One of the best books I have read this year... An element of suspense runs through the pages, and the endearing tale builds to a crescendo of excitement and thrill while warming the heart. Meant To Be is a powerful story of love, healing, discovery and truth... I closed the covers wishing I could stay inside the green world of Meara and Fletcher's mountain. Ms. Claire has woven a tale that touched my soul and will live as a cherished keeper to read again and again. I am pleased to award Meant To Be our finest honor, RRT's Perfect 10." Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
An absorbing family mystery propels Claire's newest offering (after Long Time Coming), which follows 30-year-old Meara O'Rourke as she tries to piece together the circumstances surrounding her birth and adoption. Before she died, Meara's birth mother whispered an ominous message: "I was protecting you. Rosemary died. Stay...." Afterward, Meara learns she has inherited half ownership of Laurel Ridge, an estate that belonged to her birth mother's newly acquired husband, Mitchell Black. Mitchell's icy son Fletcher isn't willing to let a virtual stranger claim half of his childhood home, but he allows Meara to stay at Laurel Ridge while she solves the mystery of her mother's baffling words. Fletcher slowly warms toward Meara as the story progresses, but there's never any doubt the two will get together; after all, they both love nature, children and homemade pie. Fortunately, the fascinating family puzzle at the center of the novel compensates for the lack of romantic tension. Claire reveals the details of Meara's adoption morsel by morsel, which can be maddening, and her protagonists possess all the vivacity of cooked pasta. Still, there's no denying that this story is suspenseful, which should go a long way in appeasing readers. Agent, Meredith Bernstein. (June) Copyright 2004 Reed Business Information.

    Loved it

Enjoyable, suspenseful. Great sexual tension without being graphic. Pulls the reader into the main character's search of why she was given up for adoption. In tune with the preservation of nature and wild space

    Couldn't put it down....

This is my first reading of this author. Loved it. I found it engaging and entertaining. The fact that it lacks sex and murder is appealing to me. There is enough of that in real life; I don't need it when I escape into a book for refreshment. Questions around adoption will always unwrap packages of surprise. It was thrilling that Meara O'Rourke finally found a 'happy' ending to her adoption journey.

    Recommend

Enjoyable read. Romance predictable. Interesting characters. More realistic about adoption ie when you find your birth parents it is not always a fairy tale ending!

    Great read

This wasn't my favorite of Edie Claire's books, but I truly love her writing and was drawn in and couldn't put it down like the rest of them. This book has sexual frustration between the two main characters but never becomes smutty. It's an interesting story line and there is enough mystery to keep you reading. Edie Claire is a great author. She has become one of my favorites!

Couldn't putti down! Will read again, and again!

This book had everything I want in a good read. Packed with emotion, but also suspense at every turn. Edie Claire is a powerful writer, and, this book, too, did not disappoint!

    Boring

Boring not very suspenseful romance. Ms.Claire's Leigh Koslow mysteries were sprightly and entertaining, but she since she switched to 'women's fiction,' her characters have become flat and one-dimensional, and her plots contrived. Think bad Phyllis Whitney and you have Meant to Be.

    engaging romantic suspense

Just north of Pittsburgh, thirty year old schoolteacher Meara O¿Rourke receives a phone call from a Laurel Mountain hospital stating that her mom was near death from a car accident. Meara informs the caller that her mom died a month ago after suffering from a long term illness. When the hospital administrator mentions Sheila Black, Meara realizes that the woman in the trauma center is her biological mother, whom she met once.
She arrives at the hospital where her mother warns her that Rosemary died before Sheila also passes away. Attorney David Falcon informs Meara that Sheila was married to Mitchell Black who died in the crash and that Rosemary was Mitchell¿s deceased first wife. She also learns that she inherited part ownership of an estate including the nineteenth century Sheepsworth Inn. Mitchell¿s angry son Fletcher displays hostility towards Meara. He wants her to leave and will buy her out. Instead a stubborn Meara who does not want any part of the estate refuses to sell because she believes he plans to destroy this pristine land. Meara learns more about her biological mother and Mitchell to the point that she loves him, but he remains nasty towards her, making her wonder if its time to leave while her heart still beats.
This is an engaging romantic with some suspense that occurs late in the novel. For the most part, the tale is more of a character study as Meara tries to understand her mother and Fletcher, which in turn enables the audience to better understand the lead female protagonist. Fans will appreciate this insightful tale though the intrigue comes towards the second half.
Harriet Klausner
