Overview

A throwback to wholesome heartthrobs like Pat Boone, Clay Aiken is an unlikely pop star who resembles a young Barry Manilow -- Aiken won't have any parents worrying that their kids' idol worship will lead them to drink or drugs. But anyone who watched him during the 2003 season of American Idol already knows that the North Carolina native's selling point isn't his sex appeal, or lack thereof. Rather, his standout quality is his powerfully soulful vocals. Although he was the show's runner-up to Luther Vandross clone Ruben "Velvet Teddy Bear" Studdard, Aiken's melodramatic "This Is the Night" topped Studdard's anthemic "Flying Without Wings" to become the year's bestselling single. Aiken's debut album, which producer Clive Davis packs with polished, adult contemporary fare, capitalizes on the young crooner's appeal to adolescent girls who haven't yet discovered their inner bad girl and to middle-aged women in search of a gentleman. The songs are expectedly middle-of-the road, and without a live audience and judges to win over, Aiken's dynamic voice loses some of its punch. Still, there are plenty of hummable highlights, notably the catchy lead single "Invisible," the country-tinged "The Way," and the haunting soft rocker "No More Sad Songs." Although the charismatic Studdard's disc may reaffirm why he was voted the American Idol champ, the measure of this man means staying true to himself, even if that calls for being a tad nerdy. And for that reason, Aiken may be one of the coolest pop stars around.

If you're like me, you've been anxiously awaiting the day of Clay's debut album being released. I have watched Clay since his Atlanta audition, voted for him on American Idol, and saw him in concert. He is by far my favorite singer, and his CD is the only CD I have ever been this excited about. The first time I heard "Invisible" I knew I would love it. "Measure of a Man" is going straight to #1 on the charts, because of his many devoted fans. Buy this CD, because you won't regret it.

What a super CD...a nice variety of songs- each one having a "hook". Cuts showcase Clays range and his heart. I love every song and each hour or so I have a different favorite. I think that's a good sign....

I have listened to this CD numerous times and enjoy it more each time. There are 6 or 7 songs that could be released as singles and I would buy them. Congratulations, Clay. You created a CD for everyone.

Finally a CD that the whole family can listen to!Mr Aiken is the greatest singer to come along in a long time, and I believe that he will become a major superstar. His songs are mezmorizing, especially "Measure Of A Man".

Not many times can you say that every song on a CD is great, but in this case it is true. In some cases the songs are exceptional.

Clay is what most Americans look for in a person. Would be a great son or a son-in-law. He is nice looking has a great voice and most of all has manners.

I never heard of Clay Akien, up until a week ago. You see I never watched A.I. I just heard Invisible on the radio and loved it. Then all of a sudden I saw some interviews on t.v. with him. I like the fact that his music is clean, and full of emotion. This CD is awesome!

I love Clay's voice and think it shines on this CD but not as well as it shined on American Idol. This CD is way better than Ruben's which was a big disappointment to me. Clay is the best new singer to come around in a while and I recommend you try his CD for easy listening.

This is a must buy album. Clay Aikan demonstrates his versatility and wonderful smooth voice with soulful melodies and heart touching lyrics. It is one of those rare albums where almost every song is memorable and catchy.

At first I was disappointed that the album did not have the Clay Aiken signature ballad theme to it. But after listening to the songs for the second time, I actually found myself liking the songs. Clay may not be the looker we expected in a pop star but his voice is just like magic. Despite the pop theme selection in this album Clay's talent shines right through. I am glad I bought this CD!

Measure of a Man is terrific from beginning to end, my whole family loves it, my 3 year old, my 15 year old, myself of course and my 65 year old mother. No matter what age, Clay touches everyone. Clay you are an amazing young man and the kind of role model this world needs. Thank You, Thank You, We Love You Clay!

I'm highly disappointed with this first album of Clay's. He does possess a remarkable voice, capable of so much more than these songs offer. I had hoped for better material for him, including some covers of a few classics. Alas, Clive Davis clearly won out. It's not completely unpleasing but it's close.

this is bad. end of story. His voice is painfully oversimulated. Why try again? Reuben won. Why does anybody care at all?

(Only half of these songs have been prereleased to sample online, so I base my review on those, as the album isn't out yet). No one else sings with the power, range, style, and gorgeous tone that Clay does. All of these songs are new - no covers! They have great stylings, melodies, lyrics, and beat, and then the best part - Clay's voice. These songs are catchy, hang around in your head, and sound so great you're really happy to have them there. Perfect Christmas gift for anyone on your list, but get your own first - these will sell out FAST.

Clay Aiken's first album is a must buy. From the very first song "Invisible" to the last song "Touch" we are treated with Clay's amazing vocals throughout the CD. There is not a single song I skip past when listening to this album. The best album of 2003 bar far!!!!

Not being really a big fan of the television show, I had concerns this album would be heavily influenced by the type of music performed on American Idol, so I borrowed a copy before purchasing. Glad to report that's not the case. If pop/AC music is to your taste, then I recommend purchase. Aiken's voice is strong and pure, and he handles the pop genre well. The CD is a mix of mid-tempo numbers and AC friendly ballads. Songs I particulary like are "Shine", "Perfect Day" and "Touch." These fall squarely in the pop category and "Touch" may be the best mix on the album. Ballad fans will like "Run to Me", "The Way", and the title track, "Measure of a Man." Aiken's tenor provides a nice delivery on each song without the melodramatics of performing on a competiton/reality TV show and it was good to hear some nuance in his voice. I gave this album 4 stars because the lyrics are a tad trite and the production tends to be a bit slick at times -- but overall it's an enjoyable listen.

I have been witing months for this CD to be released, and trust me, its no disappointment! In fact, its one of the best CDs I've heard in quite awhile. This CD is incredible. Usually when I buy a CD, I don't usually like every song on it, and skip the ones I don't like, but not this one-I love every song! Clay has such an amazing talent, and I think that its so great that he now can share his gift with the world. He is definately an American Idol!!!! :)
