Overview

The Civil War has ended, but in Katie Calloway's Georgia home conflict still rages. To protect herself and her young brother from her violent and unstable husband, she flees north, finding anonymity and sanctuary as the cook in a Northwoods lumber camp. The camp owner, Robert Foster, wonders if the lovely woman he's hired has the grit to survive the never-ending work and harsh conditions of a remote pine forest in winter. Katie wonders if she can keep her past a secret from a man she is slowly growing to love.

With grace and skill, Serena Miller brings to life a bygone era. From the ethereal, snowy forest and the warm cookstove to the rowdy shanty boys and the jagged edges of the saw, every detail is perfectly rendered, transporting the reader back to the time when pine was king, men were made of iron, and rivers were choked with logs on the way to the sawmills. Readers will have a hard time leaving the Northwoods when they turn the last page.

Library Journal
In the aftermath of the Civil War, Katie Calloway and her young brother flee Georgia and Katie's violent, abusive husband, Harlan. Landing in Michigan, she is hired as a cook by logging company owner Robert Foster. Having assumed a new identity, Katie hopes that her husband will never find her. Harlan, however, has other plans. To marry a wealthy woman, he must first find—and kill—Katie. Can Katie trust Robert with her secret? Will he help her? VERDICT Miller's (Love Finds You in Sugarcreek, Ohio) mix of endearing characters, a bit of suspense, and a touching love story makes this a good choice for fans of Gilbert Morris.

This was a good romance novel with some action and adventure. I liked the fact that the main character Katie was a strong woman. The plot was pretty predictable but I still found it to be a good read. There were no sex scenes or bad language which I liked. I would read other books by this author.

I just really love this author! I have now read three of her books and they were all excellent!! This book I really enjoyed. Yes, it is a romance book but it takes place back in the days of lumberjacks, and cook shanty's. You can almost smell the pine trees and it's really fun to get to know the lumberjacks and especially the two that make it a wonderful romance story. This book is hard to put down once you start to read it and I really hope this author keeps on writing cause she is definitely worth reading.

I immensely enjoyed reading this book. Each day I looked so forward to picking up my Nook and being transported to the logging camp where there were so many beloved personalities. I hope there will be a sequel to this book, but until then, I will read more from this author.

Here's another great book by Serena B. Miller. Set in post-Civil War Michigan, the history, setting and characters really pulled me in. Serena creates wonderful characters we love to love and we can't wait to see what happens to the bad guy. Her writing is crisp and clear and makes me feel like I was there with them. I could almost smell the aromas of the wonderful meals Katie cooked for the shanty boys. I'm visiting my wish list next to read the next book by Serena B. Miller. Enjoy!

Great Story........................................ Nice romance.   The couple didn't fall in love 5 minutes after meeting .   I like that in a romance.

I finished this jewel of a tale in one day. The characters were well portrayed and this history was spot on. Most of all i enjoyed that this book as relatable to anyone no matter the religios background (its a Christian tale). This book had a lot of tender moments without the sex (and my favorite stuff is erotica). All in all geat story telling,I highly recommend!

I liked the idea of a woman cooking in a logging camp, but everything went too perfect. Other than that i liked the characters because they were believable.

The logging camp owner, cooks, loggers, results of the civil war casualties after and how they survived was interesting and so believable you felt like you were there. A super story and without all the explicit sex in so many books being published today.

I usually don't read this genre but was plesantly surprised! This book was absolutely wonderful. I didn't want it to end. Katie is a remarkable character. I could smell what she was cooking in the Shanty. While there were no sex scenes, the tension was there between her and Robert. I just bought the next book where Moon Song continues the story. A great read!

Was nice to stumble upon this free read and have the author write a story about a girl she saw in a picture while on vacation to Michigan. Learned some more history about where I grew up. The characters all came together well. Good read.

I fell in love with Katie. What a friend Mose was. I loved the fact that you can have a great story without all the sex. Great book. I look forward to reading more from this Author.

A different kind of love romance. Ties in the south and the north, along with some immigrants all looking to make a new life. Enjoyed the various characters. Being from WI I could imagine all the pine trees and the harsh winters as it is described in the story.

This book was a very, very good book. The author really let you get to know the characters. The absense of sex and profanity made the book even better. Reading this story about good people and some not so good people leaves you with a truly good feeling, I definitely want to read more by this author.

This was a story of overcoming all kinds of obstacles with God's help. The story is not preachy. It covers an interesting time frame, post civil war but not in the south. It was an enjoyable read.

I enjoyed the storyline of a woman cook in a lumber camp discovering her own strength. Some parts were a little predictable, but the author added in some nice twists and surprises. I was interested and qantes to keep reading. There was no language or sex scenes. Some religious references, but not a "preachy" book. I will look for other books by this author.
