Purpose: The purpose of this publication is to provide the nurse researcher a collection of measurement tools that are specific to patient education. The author states that relevant research tools in the area of patient education are scattered and difficult to find. Hence, this book is needed and meets the stated purpose.
Audience: The book is written for the nurse researcher and is appropriate for the student as well as the scholarly nurse who is involved with patient education. The language is appropriate for nursing professionals and the author is an authority in this area.
Features: This publication offers 88 measurement tools relevant to the area of patient education. It is organized by disease process or by health promotion concern. Specific tools are easy to locate and include scoring methods.
Assessment: The publication is an important contribution to patient education and to nursing research. It is often difficult to find the appropriate measurement tool and this book offers a wide selection of useful instruments. This second edition contains 36 more tools that the first edition.

This book presents 50 instruments that the editor collected from her review of patient education and related literature. The book is an important new resource for healthcare providers looking for instruments to measure needs for education, factors that influence learning and behavior, and outcomes of education. The purpose of the book is to provide a collection of tools previously published in diverse journals, and the editor acknowledges that the collection is incomplete. The book clearly meets the editor's objective. Students, researchers, and clinicians in any healthcare field that focuses on patient education would benefit from the book. The editor is highly credible and has written extensively in research and clinical journals; she is author of other important books on patient education. The first chapter is primarily an overview of measurement issues. The second chapter provides a brief overview of self-efficacy and quality of life issues. These two chapters would be good for a novice, but readers would need to rely on primary sources on these topics to understand the measurement issues and concepts before using one of the instruments. The table of contents indicates that the first group of instruments are related to basic needs assessments, but the remaining categories of instruments are not consistent nor are they clear about what is included. The strength of this collection of instruments is the diversity of tools that are included with over one-half measuring knowledge needs and self-efficacy. Instruments are also included for use across diverse populations and disease groups. It would have been helpful for the editor to present an organizing framework for the selectionand presentation of the instruments. For example, one might ask if instruments were selected because there is empirical evidence that the concept being measured is either influenced by patient education or influences what is taught, or by factors that influence learning.

Meet the Author

Barbara Klug Redman, PhD, RN, FAAN, is Dean and Professor at the Wayne State University College of Nursing. She received her masters and doctoral degrees at the University of Minnesota and her BSN at South Dakota State University and a second masters in bioethics at the University of Pennsylvania. She has been a postdoctoral fellow at The John Hopkins University, a fellow in Medical Ethics at Harvard Medical School, and is a Fellow of the American Academy of Nursing. Dr. Redman's career began as a staff nurse at a hospital in South Dakota. Dr. Redman has been Executive Director of the American Nurse Association, American Nurses Foundation, and American Association of Colleges of Nursing. She has also held professorships at the universities of Washington, Minnesota, Connecticut, and John Hopkins University. She has received honorary doctorates from Georgetown University and the University of Colorado. Dr. Redman has published numerous works in patient education including The Practice of Patient Education, which is now in its ninth edition and has been translated into Japanese, Finnish, Dutch and German.
