A sweet, inspiring story of love and finding one's self, Measuring Up is
sure to touch your heart. Annabel Conway is desperate. Tired of facing
the bullies at school, those who taunt her because of her weight, she
enrolls at a gym across town from her elite neighborhood. She's hoping
to get a female trainer, but she gets Tegan. Tegan who looks like all
the boys who've made fun of her. Tegan who is impossibly handsome, and
sure to look down on her. Except, he doesn't. Tegan has problems of his
own: a family to care for, an education to save for, and a job that he
needs. Annabel quickly finds herself caring for Tegan. But will she ever
be able to fully trust him, that he can wants her for who she is?
Annabel Conway is a girl many, many readers can identify with. I can't
tell you how many times I've felt a bit of disappointment over the
stereotypical heroine's physique. Tiny, petite, pixies are what we so
often get when we read a story. That doesn't exactly bother me, or put
me off a character, but I can't exactly identify with every protagonist
that's five feet tall and just "too delicate for words". [Not
that I'm bitter ;-) ] So let me just say that I love that author Nyrae
Dawn gave us a girl like Annabel. This is a girl in pain, and believe
me, I get that. But I felt at first that she spent so much time focused
on herself and her weight, that Annabel came off as a bit selfish and
shallow.Yes, having a weight problem is a big deal when you're a teen,
but she also had much to be grateful for. And that's what Tegan shows
her. Annabel quickly learns that Tegan is more than what meets the eye.
That just because a guy is gorgeous, it doesn't mean that he's shallow
or cruel. He also teaches her a lot about self-acceptance and that no
matter what you have against you, others usually deal with far worse. So
I love the growth that she experienced, the self-awareness she develops.
What I appreciate the very most is, Annabel learns that her life will
not hinge on whether she loses the weight or not. Yes, it is very
important to be healthy, but she must also learn to love herself,
regardless of her size. Nyrae Dawn is a "character" writer.
Her stories place the reader directly into the character's thoughts, and
we go through each step of the journey with them. It's not always easy.
Much like the internal dialogue we all have, Annabel becomes a bit
repetitive. There were times I wanted to tell her to "Wake
up!" and that goes for Tegan as well. But I guess the character's
flaws, their "realness", is what makes them relatable. If you
like Dawn's other books, particularly Freeing Carter, you will most
likely enjoy Measuring Up.

I know with girls, we are always trying to loose weight. We always compare ourselves to other women no matter what.
What I adored about this book is the main purpose of being happy with yourself. Annabel has dealt with being overweight for a long time. She's dealt with the name calling and even dealing with her mother's comment. I really loved how Ms. Dawn capture emotions so well. Once in Annbel's shoes I felt her desperation of wanting to loose weight, of just for once, wanting to be accepted and not ridiculed.
The love interest in the book is exactly what I wanted. A guy who knows all about be name called or made fun of. He like Annabel for her heart and not her image. He gave her strength and encouragement when she needed it the most. And Annbel did the same. When she found him turning away from her, she fought for him just as hard. I adored watching them truly love each other.
Measuring Up encompasses the true meaning of love. It gives hope to those who believe they are unworthy. If your looking for a heart-moving, engrossing book Measuring Up is for you. The portraits of judgements and who you think you are all starts with YOU! As Nyrae Dawn says," This book is dedicated to anyone who has ever felt like they don't quite "measure up". YOU DO."

Anabel is sick of the 'in' crowd at her highschool teasing her abut her weight. Her own mother is so highly critical of her that she feels she will never be able to please her. Her father is overly supportative and wants to make things easier for her. Anabel is so sick of it all that she finally decides to join a gym but goes to the otherside of town where noone will know her. Outside the gym she battles self doubts and isn't sure she can actually go in when she meets the gorgeous Tegan. Tegan is the picture perfect "gym boy" and Anabel is sure he is just trying to be nice. Then Tegan's family shows up and Tegan's little brother Timmer needs help getting into his electric wheelchair. Anabel steps up to help Tegan lift out of the van. Tegan has a protective shell build around his famiy yet cannot help but talk to Anabel as they get to know each other while working out together. Tegan begins to give hints about his attraction to Anabel. But she is sure he couldn't want a fat girl like him
The writing is beautiful and speaks to that little girl devil inside of all women who hate something about themselves. Although there is a romance the story, the real shining point of the plot is to learn how to be enough for yourself and not anyone else. Every woman should read this book. Ms. Nyrae had a way of climbing into my head and making me Aanbel. Tegan is attracted to Anabel but loves her soul and the way she looks now. Ms. Dawn writes a book that is a must read for every woman that thought about changing just that one thin.

Very cute story. I found that i could relate to a lot of what Annabel was feeling. Its a good story about finding yourself and realizing that you don't necessarily need anyone else there, just yourself.

I really like Nyrae Dawn's writing style. She keeps me interested from beginning to end of every one of her books I've read so far. This was a great feel good story and I recommend lots of young ladies who deal with image issues and even those who don't to read it. Annabelle found the strength that she really had all along and that makes me smile :)
