Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
From the table of contents page that pictures a hamburger patty with pepperoni eyes and shrimp ears, to the introduction of the My Pyramid site provided by the government, this title encourages young readers to eat healthy. Photographs throughout the book show young readers making healthy choices: The cookout page shows young readers being served up grilled chicken on skewers rather than the traditional hamburger. The mother is shown having dinner with her child, and the plate contains a veggie burger and roll with salad. No french fries here. Children share a bowl of chili, and young snackers eat from a can of mixed nuts on the front steps, not in front of the television. The text is simple and easy to read. The message is simple, but compelling. A glossary, index, and helpful Internet pages are included. Multicultural images are presented throughout the text. Other titles in the "Healthy Eating with My Pyramid" series cover fruits, water, grains, snacks, exercise, vegetables, and meat. This is an excellent introduction to healthy lifestyles for all early elementary school students. This would be a good choice for elementary science classrooms, supporting the national science standards for nutrition and health. 2006, Capstone Press, Ages 4 to 6.
