Reviewer: LouAnn Schraffenberger, MBA, RHIA, CCS, CCS-P(Advocate Health Care)
Description: This is an alphabetic list of 15,000 current acronyms, symbols, and other abbreviations used in healthcare. The book started with "1,700 medical abbreviations" in 1983 and has grown larger with each edition published every 2-3 years since. The book also contains a cross reference list of 3,300 generic and brand drug names. Buying the book allows the reader to have a 24-month single user access to the Internet version of the book that is updated monthly.
Purpose: According to the author, the list has been compiled to assist individuals in reading and transcribing medical records, medically related communications, and prescriptions.
Audience: The audience could include anyone who must read and understand medical information in health records or related documents.
Features: The author has continued to create a comprehensive listing of healthcare abbreviations, acronyms and symbols. The author wisely warns the users of abbreviations to beware of the dangers of misinterpretations. He includes a table of "Examples of dangerous abbreviations" as an illustration of misuse. The best feature of the book is its vast number of entries and definitions.
Assessment: The author has once again produced an essential reference tool for anyone who must read and understand medical language in healthcare documents. An added bonus for the book's owner is the single-user access to the Internet version of the book that is valid for 24 months and is updated monthly. This latest feature keeps the book updated on a continual basis — a very nice benefit!
