Editorial Reviews

Doody's Review Service
Reviewer: John Mark Oscherwitz, M.D.(University of Kansas School of Medicine)
Description: This manual is designed to provide information on the diagnosis and treatment of common medical conditions. The book is unique in that it uses algorithms as an approach to medical disorders and at the same time includes basic pathophysiology.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide students, house officers, and clinicians with an efficient, up-to-date manual for the most common medical conditions encountered in the emergency room and on medical wards. The goal of the authors is achieved in an appropriate manner through an informative and useful approach.
Audience: The book is targeted toward medical students and house staff, but it would also be useful for private practitioners and physicians in other health care fields. The author and contributors are very credible in their respective fields.
Features: The contributors use many tables and algorithms in certain areas, such as cardiology, that are very illustrative. However, there are other chapters, such as infectious diseases, which have a paucity of algorithms. The references cited are quite current and comprehensive.
Assessment: This is a very useful resource for medical students and practitioners in medicine. Information is presented through specific algorithms that are particularly effective. There is certainly a need for this type of manual. It not only provides a great deal of information in an efficient manner for on-call physicians and private practitioners, but it also demonstrates the fundamental principles of medicine.
