Editorial Reviews

VOYA - Erin Kilby
This timely Crime Scene Investigations series skillfully plays on the interest in forensic science created by CSI-dominated TV. Each volume, written by differing authors, seeks to reveal the reality behind the fiction using uncomplicated terms and short chapters to explain an extremely sophisticated science. Both Bombings and The Medical Examiner scrutinize current, highly publicized criminal cases that young readers will recognize, taking them step-by-step through the process of investigation. Case studies are accompanied by actual, clearly labeled, color case photos showing just enough to fascinate the reader without unneeded gore. Additional graphics in the form of unique statistical charts, illustrations, and quirky "By the Numbers" facts move the short chapters forward, while lime green fingerprint sections explain investigations in even more detail. For those readers enticed by the possibility of a career in forensics, the series incorporates job descriptions, complete with educational requirements and minimum salary expectations. Can anyone say "book talk?" The bold and generous use of graphics and the wonderfully written, accessible prose in this series guarantee that it will become a high-interest, nonfiction page-turner that readers will want to take home. While a glossary would have made this series flawless, it is still a must-have for secondary libraries. With additional titles including Arson, Murder and Forensic Anthropology, and two books that focus on historical cases—The Birmingham Church Bombings and Murder in Mississippi—it will be no mystery why these books continuously disappear from the shelves.

Gr 7-10-Each book has fascinating, factual information and quotes taken from interviews with professionals. While heavily detailed, the texts are readable and will satisfy the curiosity of teens interested in how law-enforcement personnel piece together clues to solve crimes. The material covers tools, techniques, and laboratory studies integral to analyzing causes of death and causes of fires, as well as careers and legal processes. Emphasizing crime-scene analysis, these well-organized titles have clear subheadings, tables of statistics, and well-chosen color photos.-Lynn K.
