Editorial Reviews

Doody's Review Service
Reviewer: Michael Joel Schrift, D.O., M.A.(University of Illinois at Chicago College of Medicine)
Description: Individuals with schizophrenia tend to be disadvantaged in numerous ways which impinge upon their range of normal human opportunities. These disadvantages include, but are not limited to, lack of access to care, a brain disease that affects judgment and insight, low socioeconomic status, and adverse reactions to treatments, to list a few. This excellent book, written and edited by clinician-researchers in the field, is a unique and first-rate review of the healthcare problems and needs of those suffering from schizophrenia, which is an enormous public health problem. This second edition is a welcome addition to this important literature.
Purpose: The aim of the book is, according to the editors, "to create a practical manual that can serve as a reference for the medical management of patients with severe mental illness." Indeed, the editors and chapter authors, with this expanded edition, have met their noble goal by helping readers to conceptualize schizophrenia as a "systemic disease with multiple manifestations that go beyond the obvious psychiatric symptoms."
Audience: The target audience includes any mental health or medical professional involved in the care of patients with chronic, severe psychiatric disorders.
Features: Part 1 focuses on public health issues for patients with schizophrenia and includes chapters covering ways to improve healthcare for the seriously mentally ill, excess mortality and morbidity, and medical outcomes related to interventions used in the CATIE study. Metabolic and heart disease is reviewed in part 2, with chapters on obesity, diabetes, hyperlipidemia, cardiovascular disease, behavioral treatments for weight management, and nicotine/tobacco use. Part 3 focuses on special topics such as HIV and hepatitis C, substance abuse, sexual dysfunction, children and adolescents, the elderly, and pregnancy/breast feeding in patients with schizophrenia. Each chapter ends with pertinent and timely references of the scientific literature.
Assessment: This second edition of this superb book on the healthcare problems associated with the diagnosis of schizophrenia is an informative and valuable reference and is essential reading for all psychiatrists involved in the care of patients with this severe psychiatric disorder.
Psychiatric Services

I would highly recommend this book to all physicians, nurses, and trainees who treat patients with schizophrenia, either in the psychiatric or the primary care setting. In addition to its value as a continuing education resource, this volume is a great quick reference when dealing with the myriad medical problems our patients face every day.

Psychosomatics

Every trainee and clinician should have access to this volume. I am glad that our field now has a book called, "Medical Illness and Schizophrenia." The existence of this book signifies unmistakably that "mens sana in corpore sano" is an appropriate guiding principle for any healthcare professional who is involved in the care of patients with schizophrenia. Two "thumbs-up" from me for this book.
