Editorial Reviews

Doody's Review Service
Reviewer: Edward W. Bermes, Jr., PhD (Loyola University Medical Center)
Description: This is a book describing the management skills necessary to supervise and manage the operations of a medical laboratory.
Purpose: The purpose is to help laboratorians acquire the management tools with which to deal with the changing forces, including market forces, which impact the clinical laboratory, and to prepare one for the challenges of tomorrow.
Audience: The audience could be college level students in a medical technology program. This would help the student prepare for a leadership role. This could also be used by an experienced laboratorian who is in need of training in management skills to deal with the increasing pressures of the business of laboratory medicine. This book would be useful for those preparing to take a professional examination for certification as laboratory supervisors and directors.
Features: The questions for study and review are very useful, and some may find the examination index to be helpful.
Assessment: This book is an introductory text on laboratory management. To its credit, it covers the entire area, not just traditional topics such as human resources, fiscal management, and management systems approaches, but also areas on regulatory issues and licensure. The authors cover marketing, an area that may be completely foreign to many laboratorians.
