From The CriticsReviewer: Regina Rosa Lopez, MD (University of Illinois at Chicago College of Medicine)
Description: This book serves as a guide to the medical, nutritional, and psychological therapies of anorexia nervosa and related eating disorders. It is divided into medical manifestations by body systems and physical complaints.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide assistance in the understanding, treatment, and management of patients with eating disorders. These are worthy objectives for such a challenging illness. The book meets the authors' objectives for a portion of their intended audience.
Audience: According to the authors, the book is written for medical practitioners, psychiatrists, physicians, pediatricians, general practitioners, and other health professionals involved with eating disorder patients. In my judgment, the book was less targeted toward those in the field of psychology and outpatient psychiatry. The authors are credible authorities on the subject. Together they have over 50 years of experience in the area of eating disorders. Also, each of the authors has edited books and published many articles on the subject.
Features: The book covers the principles and practice of treatment in anorexia nervosa and related eating disorders. The medical and nutritional therapies are well covered. The psychological therapies are less comprehensive. The tables are detailed, yet are not overly inclusive. The treatment algorithms in the figures are clinically applicable. A unique feature is the section with the color photographs of physical manifestations of eating disorders. Also, the bibliography contains journal articles on medical management of eating disorders. The book is user-friendly. Because the authors are or have been professors of psychiatry, a shortcoming of the book is that the psychiatric and psychological section is not more of a focus.
Assessment: This is a great handbook for those involved in the medical management of eating disorders. As a psychiatry resident, I will find this book very useful as a reference.
