The medical management of common pulmonary problems and diseases encountered in the ambulatory setting are addressed in this book. It is, indeed, what the editors promised in the preface: a useful, concise, readable, authoritative, and current text to help practicing physicians in the clinical care of patients with pulmonary disease. It is written for a diverse audience that includes specialists in pulmonary disease, generalists, physicians in training, as well as nurse practitioners, physician assistants, and respiratory therapists. Although this seems to be an impossible task, the editors do a remarkable job by enlisting contributors who are mainly pulmonary specialists and authorities in their fields, and by having a practicing general internist as an associate editor. The book is divided into seven well-illustrated parts. The first three sections are a brief overview of pulmonary physiology, pulmonary signs and symptoms, and diagnostic tests. In Section VI pulmonary diseases are discussed in the classic textbook approach. Sections IV, V, and VII are probably the most helpful and truly unique sections of the book. Topics of practical importance are covered (like dyspnea, cough, pleural effusions, oxygen therapy, smoking cessation, pregnancy, etc.) that cross several disciplines and/or diseases and that are not readily accessible in traditional textbooks. This excellent text would be helpful to busy practitioners evaluating and treating patients with pulmonary disease. The main strengths are brevity and readability. This book could easily be the only pulmonary book in the library of a generalist, nurse practitioner, physician assistant, or respiratory therapist. For thepulmonary specialist, this book is a valuable companion to more in-depth texts in the field. It is more readable and user friendly for everyday problems than the comprehensive tests. It is not, however, intended to replace comprehensive pulmonary texts.

Annals of Internal Medicine

This text was designed to assist in the clinical care of patients with a variety of respiratory diseases, with a focus on the common but difficult problems in medical management. It emphasizes diagnosis and therapy, rather than epidemiology or pathophysiology, and pays particular attention to problems in the ambulatory care setting, with somewhat less attention give to the hospital setting. Dozens of pulmonary experts have contributed articles to this project which cover the basics of the anatomy and physiology of the respiratory tract, symptoms and signs of disease, diagnostic studies, treatment dilemmas, and common therapies.
