Description: Written by a distinguished group of professionals, this book is the second edition of a noteworthy medical nutrition textbook first released in 1996.
Purpose: The purpose is to improve nutrition education in medical schools. Currently, more than 50 medical schools use the first edition as a model in the development and implementation of their own nutrition curriculum. This second edition will provide updated material that includes essential topics based upon the National Academy of Sciences report, Nutrition Education in U.S. Medical Schools.
Audience: According to the editors, the text is written for those teaching nutrition in a variety of settings, including instructors in undergraduate and graduate programs in dietetics and medical, nursing, and physician assistant programs. It also can be used for more than one course over several years. The student can use the text to advance his or her knowledge and skills in nutrition by reading the chapters and cases and completing the questions at the end of the book.
Features: This second edition was updated by nationally recognized physicians and nutritionists, and consists of 12 chapters covering a broad overview of nutrition-related topics. Topics include nutrition assessment, vitamins, minerals, nutrition throughout the life cycle, and nutritional management of diseases. Each chapter includes case topics that have direct application to patient care and emphasize prevention of illness. A list of questions with answers is included with each case topic. Review questions and answers are included in each chapter, plus a glossary, references, and an index.
Assessment: This is a current, well-written nutrition textbook that can be used by multiple disciplines or healthcare practitioners. The nutrition body of knowledge has grown significantly since the previous edition; thus this updated version is sorely needed. Nutrition is one of the core disciplines for healthcare, thus current textbooks are important.
