Overview

An understanding of a wide range of medical problems was already vital in the provision of oral health care when the first edition of this book was published more than 15 years ago. Since that time the population in the developed world has aged, new diseases have contributed to an increasing cohort of persons with significant health problems who now survive longer, and some dental procedures, such as dental implants, have been introduced into clinical practice.

The book contains black-and-white figures.

Editorial Reviews

Doody's Review Service
Reviewer: Aladean Attar, DMD (University of Chicago Medical Center)
Description: This book covers general medical and surgical conditions relevant to oral health care. This is the fourth edition, the first was published in 1982.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide a basis of understanding about a variety of medical conditions relevant to oral health care. The text is just one of the many ways to access knowledge for continuing education purposes. It is not intended to be a comprehensive guide to oral medicine; it is a reference source for the many medical conditions of the dental patient.
Audience: The authors state this is a text for the dental professional. However, it could also be an excellent source of reference for the resident or student. The authors have numerous publications on oral pathology and oral medicine.
Features: The book covers various topics such as bleeding disorders, cardiac disease, diabetes, and immunosuppressive treatment, as well as their management. The topics encompass day-to-day concerns for the dental practitioner. Tables are clear and concise, and easy to understand. This fourth edition has a section of colored photographs, which can aid in understanding some aspects of a specific malady.
Assessment: This is an excellent reference for the many conditions of the dental patient. It can be useful as a guide for the practitioner, or a primary text for students. Due to the complex and changing nature of medicine, this fourth edition was warranted.

Booknews
New edition of a reference to the general medical and surgical conditions relevant to the oral health care sciences. Twenty-seven chapters cover the importance of dental health in those with medical conditions and the possible hazards of operative intervention related to such issues as: perioperative care, cardiovascular disease, disorders of hemostasis, anemia, malignant disease, cytotoxic chemotherapy and radiotherapy, respiratory problems, gastrointestinal disorders, liver disease, infections, and skin diseases, among other disorders, as well as special considerations for special populations<-->the young, the elderly, the chemically dependent, and various ethnic and socioeconomic groups. Annotation c. by Book News, Inc., Portland, Or.
From the Publisher
"Do I need this book, or one of similar quality? There is no doubt; it is an item that I would want available in any multiple-surgery practice I worked in, for all of the staff, for reference, and for quickly resolving differences of opinion. However, I would encourage home reading, too; you will be surprised what updates you need and what grabs your attention."
