Editorial Reviews

Doody's Review Service
Reviewer: Penny Wolfe Moore, RNC, PhD (Southwestern Adventist University)
Description: This third edition, organized around body systems and medical diagnoses, contains (in outline form) care plans for acutely ill, hospitalized patients. Definitions, related nursing diagnoses, expected outcomes, interventions, and rationales are included. The first publication was in 1986.
Purpose: This is a resource book for nurses who plan or manage care of ill adults. Those who teach or are learning will find this book valuable.
Audience: The author is a retired nursing educator with experience in care planning, teaching, and writing. Students and experienced nurses will find this book a great reference for situations that are unfamiliar to them.
Features: The application of the care plan material is straightforward and easily understood. There are no illustrations about how the information can be applied in the newer formats (care maps, critical pathways, etc.). There are 18 references, all current, at the end of this 925-page book. The interventions are not indicated to be research based. The book is attractive, with a paper cover and a spiral binder. The appendix of nursing diagnoses is complete and an easy reference.
Assessment: This book would be useful in nursing libraries, on acute care adult nursing units, and as a student reference. It includes the information needed to use the newest NANDA selected nursing diagnoses. It offers a beginning point for care planning but would require additional work to individualize the plans for implementation.

    Nursing Student's Dream

This book has helped my classmates and I so much. When you are asked to write care plans and you have no idea where to start, this book is wonderful!
