Doody's Review ServiceReviewer: Josie Martin Bowman, RN, MSN, DSN (East Carolina University )
Description: This book covers the information that nurses need to obtain certification. Each chapter covers a different body system, discussing the nursing history and physical assessment. Select disorders are covered with a focus on description, signs and symptoms, and diagnosis and treatment.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide a "foundation for examination review and preparation." The book meets this objective, providing the necessary content to help nurses prepare for certification. Certification is valued and in some healthcare institutions is required as a measure of clinical competence.
Audience: The review is intended for nurses who desire certification for the American Nurses Credentialing Center's Medical Surgical Nurse. It is also useful preparation for the Academy of Medical-Surgical Nurses certification. The contributors and collaborators are experts in the field.
Features: The book is arranged around body systems, with an initial discussion of overall history and physical assessment. General signs and treatment are covered related to the system. The most common disorders in each system are discussed with an emphasis on major points. Tables and charts highlight important information. After each chapter there are pop quizzes with rationales for the correct answers. There is also a post test at the end of the book.
Assessment: This is an excellent resource to use in preparing for medical-surgical certification. This fourth edition includes the latest and most current information. I would recommend this review for preparation for certification.
