Overview

Medical-Surgical Nursing: Critical Thinking for Collaborative Care is a comprehensive yet eminently readable undergraduate textbook of
medical-surgical/adult health nursing that addresses the very latest trends in nursing care of adults. Revised after just three years, it incorporates both NIC intervention categories and outcome statements that are consistent with NOC outcome indicators, as well as enhanced coverage of complementary and alternative therapies, community-based care, cultural diversity, substance abuse, evidence-based practice, Healthy People 2010 goals, and cost-of-care implications for nursing. Together with a thoroughly revised Critical Thinking Study Guide, an innovative Instructor's Manual, and a groundbreaking new Virtual Clinical Excursions web-based learning experience, the 4th edition of "Iggy" moves to the forefront of nursing education as a fully integrated multimedia instructional package for mediacl-surgical nursing.

Editorial Reviews

From The Critics
Reviewer: Penny Wolfe Moore, RNC, PhD(Southwestern Adventist University)
Description: This is a comprehensive, extensively illustrated textbook of medical-surgical nursing. The 3rd edition was published in 1999.
Purpose: The purpose, according to the authors, is ". . . [this text] together with its fully integrated multimedia ancillary package, provides the tools you will need to meet the challenge of nursing in the first decade of the 21st century and beyond." Nursing students and faculty will be hard pressed to find any necessary information that has been omitted from this comprehensive book.
Audience: No doubt about it, this book is written for nursing students and faculty. Integrated multimedia resources are available for students (Critical Thinking Study Guide, Clinical Companion, and Virtual Clinical Excursions workbook/CD-ROM) and for faculty (Instructor's Manual, Test Bank, LectureView Image/Slide Collection). The editors are well qualified as nursing authors. Thirty-three contributors and 63 reviewers were involved in this project. The chapters have been carefully edited so a common style is found throughout, chapter length is consistent, and the same reading level is maintained.
Features: Sixteen units and 77 chapters cover medical-surgical nursing thoroughly. New to this edition: critical thinking focus, an enhanced section on women's health, cultural considerations, complementary and alternative therapies, special needs of older adults, case management, and community-based care. For each learning objective students will find corresponding self-assessment questions on the SIMON website. Additional learning activities are also available there. I am impressed with the many illustrations, all in multiple color, many fo them photographs. Information is clustered and presented in different formats to enhance learning. For example, each chapter begins with a "Core Concepts Grid" where the basic concepts of the topic are shown according to anatomy, physiology, pathophysiology, history, physical exam, diagnostic tests, interventions, and pharmacology. This page alone can guide the classroom learning experience and student review for examinations.
Assessment: I have not reviewed another medical-surgical book that is as comprehensive, as well organized, indexed or illustrated as this one. It is absolutely excellent.

    Nursing Students

This book is very heavy, you are charged more for shipping. As with the other review, you need a bag on wheels to transport this book. Alot of info is covered, some of the equipment pictured is outdated but you get the general idea. The Study guide that accompanies this book is a must have to help outline the chapters.

Required Book for My Nursing Program

This is a massive book that glosses over some important topics at times. It is ridiculously heavy so if it's required reading for you, get a roll around backpack to save your back. There is nothing about the book that really says 'easy to understand'. Some of the charts break info down but for the most part it seems to be the longest most boring book I have purchased for class so far and I only use it when I have to. One of its better features is the breakdown of nursing diagnoses for care for different health problems. Useful with care maps. If you are like me and need things broken down a little more I recommend supplemental books to help you grasp the concepts and care map books as well.
