Description: This is the second edition of a comprehensive pocket-sized medical-surgical guide. The guide covers 170 acute and chronic conditions of body systems. There is a section on patients with special needs such as HIV and wound care.
Purpose: The purpose is to be a clinical companion to medical-surgical textbooks and to help staff and students plan and evaluate care of adult patients with medical-surgical conditions.
Audience: It is intended for nursing staff and nursing students who are assigned to either a medical or a surgical unit. The guide provides invaluable assistance to both professional and nonprofessional nursing staff in planning, implementing, and evaluating nursing care.
Features: The guide uses a two-color format with tabs to assist in instant retrieval of information. It includes NANDA-approved nursing diagnoses and outcome criteria to facilitate evaluation. Patient-family teaching and discharge planning are included in each section. It includes expanded coverage of pulmonary tuberculosis, HIV disease, and care of the older adult. An appendix covers nursing care of preoperative and postoperative patients, patients with cancer, and older adults.
Assessment: This is an extremely helpful and comprehensive medical/surgical pocket guide for practitioners and students. The included diagnoses are the ones most commonly seen as primary admission diagnoses or those frequently seen as secondary diagnoses.
