Doody's Review ServiceReviewer: Lavonne M. Adams, PhD, RN, CCRN (Southwestern Adventist University)
Description: This is the third edition of a review book designed to address major content areas of medical-surgical nursing that is part of Lippincott's Review Series.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide comprehensive review of medical-surgical nursing. Additionally, the author provides opportunities for the reader to self-test in all the major content areas.
Audience: The target audience for the book is undergraduate nursing students preparing for NCLEX, both during school and following completion of the entry-level nursing program.
Features: The author follows a body systems approach to outlining medical-surgical content. She provides multiple review questions: each chapter has review questions with answer keys and rationale, and a comprehensive test with answer key and rationale concludes the text. The accompanying CD includes additional review questions. Appendixes include a glossary and a list of referral organizations. Illustrations and charts are of acceptable quality and educational value.
Assessment: The author takes a comprehensive outline approach to the review of medical-surgical nursing. The chapters are well organized and the index is easy to use, making targeted review possible. The charts and tables add to the clarity of the review, although most of them do not have reference citations. The bibliography does include a wide variety of pertinent and current references, but a few more in-text references might be helpful in providing direction to a reader seeking more detailed study. The overall organization of the book lends itself well to use as a supplemental study aid during the entry-level nursing program, as well as a review tool prior to NCLEX. Frequent updating of NCLEX review material is beneficial, so the third edition is justified.
