Doody's Review ServiceReviewer: Penny Wolfe Moore, RNC, PhD (Southwestern Adventist University)
Description: This sixth edition is a comprehensive textbook of 2388 pages with multiple color illustrations. It is an improvement over the fifth edition in both visual stimulation and currency of content.
Purpose: Recent changes in healthcare are reflected in this medical/surgical textbook, such as an emphasis on geriatrics and the delivery of healthcare to patients with medical/surgical problems regardless of the setting. Concepts related to leadership and management are included.
Audience: Nursing students, their teachers, and practitioners will find this text useful. Each of these groups is targeted with special ancillaries including an instructor's manual, study guide, test bank CD-ROM, Internet information network, image collection CD-ROM, and video series.
Features: The text is divided into two parts. Part one describes elements that apply to many patients regardless of the medical diagnosis (emphasis on nursing diagnosis), part two concentrates on a body systems approach. Each chapter includes objectives, critical thinking questions, and a summary. New features include full color illustrations, interactive CD-ROM, patient teaching boxes, guidelines for care boxes, common medication tables, and clinical manifestation and risk factor boxes. Care plans, clinical pathways, and research are included.
Assessment: Visual stimulation and use of illustrations compare favorably with Brunner and Suddarth's Textbook of Medical-Surgical Nursing, 8th Edition, but the available ancillaries in this text are superior. This is a high quality student text and would be an asset for any library frequented by nurses or nursing students. Mosby's Electronic Resource Links and Information Network (MERLIN) is excellent. Each textbook contains a password for access. Click on the desired chapter name and links to other high quality sites become available.
